LONG BEACH - Swimming in the Southern Section championships is pressure enough, never mind having to compete next to an Olympic medalist An Olympic medalist is the winner of a medal in one of the Olympic Games. There are three classes of medal: gold, silver and bronze. Some countries, besides supporting all their Olympic athletes, pay sums of money and gifts to medal winners depending on the classes and number of .

But that's what Justin McClure of Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  faced Friday night when he ended up in a lane next to Newport Harbor's Aaron Peirsol Aaron Wells Peirsol (born July 23, 1983 in Irvine, California) is an American competitive swimmer. He is best known for winning both available gold medals for men in the backstroke at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.  in the 200-yard freestyle event in the Division I finals at Belmont Plaza.

McClure finished sixth in 1 minute, 44.24 seconds, his second-best time ever but almost six seconds short of Peirsol, a silver medalist in the 200- meter backstroke in last year's Summer Olympics, and his time of 1:38.62.

``I was just going for my best time,'' McClure said. ``I was seeded third, so I was hoping at least for that.''

McClure said he might have expended too much energy in last week's Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  finals, before which he shaved down in order to capture two league records and one school record.

``I probably was a little worn down,'' said McClure, who also swam in the 200 medley relay about five minutes before the 200 free. ``A lot of these guys hadn't been shaved for league like I was.''

Peirsol also topped McClure in the 100 backstroke final with a winning time of 48.12. McClure finished last in the finals heat in 53.42.

Agoura's Nicole Shiflett and Westlake's Sarah Bultema were the only other area swimmers to make an individual final.

Shiflett finished fifth in the 50 free (24.42) and sixth in the 100 free (53.06) and Bultema finished fifth in the 100 fly (58.16).

Records were set in nine of the 11 girls' events. Irvine's 200 medley relay team set a national high school record in 1:44.80 and San Clemente's Kristen Caverly Kristen Caverly (born September 20, 1984 in San Clemente, California) is a female medley and backstroke swimmer from the United States, who won the silver medal in the women's 400m individual medley event at the 2003 Pan American Games.  set a national public school record in the 200 IM in 1:58.86.

Caverly also set the 100 breaststroke state record (1:01.67), and El Toro's Kaitlin Sandeno Kaitlin Shea Sandeno (born March 13, 1983 in Mission Viejo, California) is an American swimmer, and was part of the team that set the world record in the 4x200 m freestyle relay at the 2004 Summer Olympics. , headed for USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  in the fall, set a state record in the 100 fly (53.62) and a Division I record in the 500 free (4:39.64).

Irvine swept the team competition, winning the boys' meet with 279 points and the girls' meet with 294 points.

In the Division III prelims earlier Friday, Rio Mesa of Oxnard's Nicholas Glaze was the only local boy to reach a final. He qualified third in the 200 IM in 1:59.98.

Camarillo's Carrie Fitzgerald and Jessi Rodriquez each qualified for two finals, Fitzgerald in the 200 free (seventh, 1:57.66) and 500 free (eighth, 5:13.43) and Rodriquez in the 200 IM (seventh, 2:14.43) and 100 breaststroke (third, 1:09.44).
