SOUTHERN SECTION SWIMMING: JENKINS IS A NATURAL FOR CV.

Byline: Scott Magaloff Staff Writer

LONG BEACH - Imagine if James Jenkins fully devoted himself to swimming.

He'd be scarier in the water than he is on the basketball court, where he averaged about 20 points and 12 rebounds per game for Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  High last season.

Jenkins only joins the Falcons swim team when basketball is over and whatever success he enjoys is a byproduct by·prod·uct or by-prod·uct

, Jenkins' teammate at Crescenta Valley, swam an All- American automatic time to win (4:32.43) in the 500 freestyle Thursday.

Jenkins, Taylor and the rest of Crescenta Valley's boys' team are pushing for their third straight section championship. It would be the perfect send-off for retiring coach Pete Loporchio, but the Falcons appear to be in for a more competitive championship meet than in the past.

Like Taylor, Alemany of Mission Hills junior Maureen Farrell also swam an All-American automatic time in winning (56.68) the 100 backstroke. Farrell, who qualified for the Olympic Trials in August in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke, also placed first (24.01) in the 50 freestyle.

His results are more impressive when considering that his events were in succession at the meet, providing precious few moments for rest and preparation.

Westlake of Westlake Village senior Taryn O'Leary also fared well in the prelims, finishing third (24.62) in the 50 free. She suffered a setback in the 100, however, placing 11th (54.06).
