SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL PREVIEW: CHAMINADE IS PREPARED.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

In softball, easy wins can be deceiving and hardly beneficial.

Take Chaminade High, for instance. The Eagles rolled over Immaculate Heart Immaculate Heart may refer to:

, a wild-card entry from the Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:
  • Río Hondo, a town in the Guatemalan department of Zacapa.

 will enjoy similar results.

The point is, beating mediocre teams will not help Chaminade prepare for the section final, especially because of the lack of quality pitching it will see along the way.

There's nothing the Eagles can do about the problem - you play the teams you are told to play - but maybe now people understand why Chaminade coach Steve Harrington assembled such a demanding schedule this year.

The Eagles might not face great pitching in the first few rounds of the playoffs, or even throughout the postseason, but that doesn't mean they haven't seen it this year.

Or beaten great pitching, for that matter. Chaminade defeated Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga

And even though the Eagles (21-6-1) struggled early in the year, losing five of their first seven games, each came against an established team.

``We've already seen the best teams we'll see will year,'' Harrington said. ``We've seen the best of the best.''

Imagine Thousand Oaks' predicament. The Lancers lanc·er

didn't learn who their second-round Division I opponent was until Monday night. That's because Quartz Hill and Glendora had their first-round game halted Friday in a 1-1 tie after 17 innings. The Rebels finally won in 19 innings Monday after play was resumed. The Lancers host Quartz Hill today at 3:15 p.m.

In other second-round Division I Southern Section playoff games today, Crescenta Valley is at Mater Dei and Camarillo is at Diamond Bar and Highland, an upset winner Friday over Rancho Cucamonga, travels to Canyon Springs.

In Division II, Saugus hosts La Serna. In Division III, Calabasas travels to Valencia of Placentia and Newbury Park is at Dos Pueblos.
