SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL: CAMARILLO GOES DEEP FOR VICTORY HOMERS SPARK WIN OVER SAUGUS.

CAMARILLO -- Lauren Erb said she felt nothing as the ball jumped off her bat Tuesday.

By the time she got back to the dugout dugout: see canoe. , it was apparent to her that her Camarillo High teammates felt differently.

``Everybody was going crazy,'' she said. ``I couldn't hear myself think.''

The energized Scorpions went on to beat Saugus 2-1 in a Southern Section Div. I second-round softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

Camarillo (27-3) will make its fifth consecutive quarterfinal appearance on Thursday when it plays Riverside Poly at a site to be determined. The Scorpions will look to advance to the semifinals for the fourth time in five years. Their most recent section championship was in 1991.

Erb's homer -- her fifth -- cleared the left center-field fence leading off the bottom of the fourth. It came on an 0-1 pitch off Saugus senior Sarah Hooper (17-5), breaking a scoreless tie.

Three batters later, senior first baseman Garen Garza cleared the fence with a solo shot to left -- her third.

``We had to move players around all season and they didn't give up,'' Saugus coach Rich Perez said. ``They stuck together and they battled every game and they had a great attitude the entire season. I'm proud of how they played.''
