SOUTHERN SECTION ROUNDUP FURLOW, BYNUM FUEL ROUT.Byline: Daily News Palmdale is viewed as the team to beat in the Golden League, and they proved why by smashing the visiting Bulldogs 43-0 Friday. Falcons quarterback Terry Furlow, who is the area's top passer, is a big reason why. He displayed his amazing athletic ability throughout the game to throw for 154 yards, completing 10 of 14 passes. Furlow also was complemented by a strong running game. Bobby Bynum rushed for 105 yards and scored two touchdowns, while teammate Emanuel Johnson also scored twice. Palmdale's defense, which had struggled of late, held a Bulldogs offense in check by allowing only 89 yards. ``Our defense did an outstanding job getting us the ball,'' said Palmdale coach Jeff Williams. ``We played about as perfect a game as we could have played.'' - Jay Yim --Quartz Hill 17, Littlerock 14: Jorge Portillo kicked the game-winning 25-yard field goal in overtime and the Rebels' defense stopped Littlerock's John Ford on fourth down to preserve the victory for Quartz Hill (2-4, 1-0) in the Golden League opener for both teams. Ford, who rushed for 178 yards on 37 carries, helped the Lobos (2-4, 0-1) erase a 14-point deficit by scoring on runs of 15 and 1 yards to send the game into overtime. Mychael Williams rushed for 146 yards on 31 carries for the Rebels. - John Sanders --Hart 45, Burbank 8: Kyle Matter threw for 397 yards and six touchdowns as the Indians of Newhall bounced back from a loss to Loyola with an easy win over the Bulldogs at Burroughs in their Foothill League opener. Hart (4-2, 1-0) controlled the game from the outset, jumping out to a 35-0 halftime lead as Matter had little trouble finding open receivers. In the first quarter, Matter completed all 11 of his pass attempts and finished the game with 34 completions in 41 attempts. Burbank (2-4, 0-1) scored its only touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard scoring pass from Paul Escobar to Roger Starkey. However, Escobar was picked off three times in the first half by Hart's Matt Moore. Hart has now won 44 consecutive Foothill League games and figures to face its toughest league opponent, Valencia, next week. - Bob Timmermann --Burroughs 32, Canyon 7: The Indians (2-4, 1-0) opened Foothill League play with a victory over the host Cowboys of Canyon Country (3-3, 0-1). Linebacker Jeff Barrett intercepted two passes, his second setting up a 39-yard touchdown pass from Lorin Salmon to Keith Jarbo that staked Burroughs to a 12-0 halftime lead. The Indians were led by Michael Perez, who carried 14 times for 102 yards and one touchdown. Salmon completed 4 of 12 passes for 106 yards and one touchdown. Colin MacNeil carried 13 times for 69 yards and scored the Cowboys' lone touchdown. The Burroughs defense had five interception and three quarterback sacks. Marvin Lowery returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown to close out the scoring. - Steve Goldstein --Muir 54, Glendale 3: Deon Thomas rushed five times for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead Muir of Pasadena (4-2) over Glendale in a Pacific League opener at Moyse Field. Thomas scored on runs 43 and 38 yards to pace an offense that totaled 357 yards on the ground. Quarterback Christopher Dickson rushed six times for 69 yards and a touchdown. Dickson also hooked up with Everett Brothers for a 51-yard touchdown. Anderson Phillips also had a big game, totaling 73 yards and two touchdowns including a 59-yard score. Glendale (0-6) was paced by Dustin Nersesyan, who carried 21 times for 92 yards. Jose Alas' 35-yard field goal in the second quarter accounted for the Dynamiters' only points. - Bryan Schackmann --Loyola 49, St. John Bosco 13: Sophomore Rafael Rice ran for 194 yards on 17 carries and scored three times as the Cubs (6-0) beat the Braves (3-3) in a nonleague game in Bellflower. Loyola scored 35 second-quarter points, highlighted by Rice scoring runs of 7 and 16 yards. Senior quarterback Matthew Ware ran for 71 yards on six carries and one touchdown while attempting only five passes for Loyola. Senior Josh Soria Soria (sōr`yä), town (1990 pop. 32,609), capital of Soria prov., N central Spain, in Castile-León, on the Duero River. It is a food processing and timbering center in a livestock raising region. The Church of San Pedro and the palace of the counts of Gómara are the chief landmarks. Nearby are the ruins of Numantia. ran for 74 yards and one touchdown on eight carries. The Cubs amassed 460 rushing yards. - Shawn Clingan --Serra 28, Crespi 10: A Crespi team intent on ruining Serra's homecoming hung tough for the first half but fell victim to the big play in the second half, keeping the Celts of Encino winless. Serra's Loren Wade rushed for a career-high 253 yards on 17 carries and scored on runs of 65, 28 and 2 yards. On the first play in the second quarter, Serra's Erik McNeal intercepted Crespi quarterback Will Jacoby's short pass and returned it 10 yards for the score. McNeal had another interception in the second half that set up Wade's third score. Late in the first half, Crespi's Donnelly Pyle knifed through the middle of the defensive line for a 24-yards touchdown to draw the Celts to within four points at 14-10. - Tim Conway --Servite 41, Alemany 7: DeAndre Scott's return to the host Indians of Mission Hills (2-4) had little effect upon Servite of Anaheim, which limited the senior to 81 yards on 17 carries in a nonleague game. Led by Justin Domineck (213 yards) and Lamar Mason (234 yards), the Friars' (5-1) smashmouth style of running accounted for 525 of their 572 total yards. Albert Griffin had 137 all-purpose yards (27 rushing and 110 on kickoff returns) and scored the Indians' lone touchdown on a 3-yard pass from A.J. Anthony in the second quarter. Garret Marxen placed two kickoffs into the end zone, averaged 38 yards on two punts and kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Alemany's defense forced four fumbles and was led by Griffin (eight tackles), Michael Sosa (10 tackles) and Jason Lance (5 tackles). - Sean Ceglinsky --St. Bernard 22, Chaminade 12: Sylvon Marshall ran for a game-high 116 yards and scored a touchdown on 15 carries to lead the host Vikings (4-1-1) past the visiting Eagles (4-2) in a nonleague game. Marshall's 2-yard touchdown run capped an 80-yard scoring drive in nine plays to give St. Bernard a 22-12 lead following the two-point conversion run by Edward Smith with 6:21 remaining in the game. - George Vranau --St. Bonaventre 46, Calabasas 7: The Seraphs' Lorenzo Booker literally ran the lights out in leading St. Bonaventure over the Coyotes. An overheated tranformer caused a blackout at Keith Ritchie Field, delaying the game for over one hour. Booker ran for 260 yards and all five of his touchdowns after play resumed with 4:48 left in the first quarter. Calabasas quarterback Justin Fenchel was sacked 11 times but still completed 13 of 29 passes for 227 yards and a score. St. Bonaventure set a Ventura County record with its 20 consecutive victory. - Justin Montello --Arcadia 47, Hoover 7: Chris Handy rushed for two touchdowns and caught another, finishing with 165 total yards to lead the host Apaches to victory in the Pacific League opener. He had 116 yards rushing on 10 carries, before taking the second half off. Apaches quarterback J.D. Ziska didn't throw much, but when he did, he was effective, dumping a screen to Handy, which turned into a 49-yard touchdown completion. Ziska also threw an 11-yard touchdown to Phillip Potter. He completed 3 of 4 passes for 96 yards before joining Handy on the sidelines as the Apaches built a 41-0 halftime lead. Hoover, which dropped to 0-6 and 0-1, was clearly outmanned by Arcadia, which improved to 3-3 and 1-0. - Fred J. Robledo --La Canada 30, South Pasadena 9: Quarterback Eric Young led the Spartans (5-1, 1-0) to victory in the Rio Hondo League opener. The junior completed 8 of 15 passes for 160 yards, most notably a 68-yard touchdown strike to Matt Jackson in the first quarter. Despite four turnovers, the Spartans controlled the ball from start to finish. Young connected with Jackson again for 8-yard score and with Lonnie Dietz for a 45-yarder. Not all of the Spartans' scoring was done on the offensive side of the ball, however. La Canada's defense forced three turnovers, one of which was returned for a touchdown by Tony Naples. The Spartans added a safety just before the half. The Spartans held South Pasadena (2-4, 0-1) to just 13 yards rushing. That put all the pressure on South Pasadena quarterback Thomas McGrail, who completed 9 of 16 passes for 120 yards, only to be pulled in the third quarter for backup Ian Lloyd. Lloyd threw his team's only touchdown, a 15-yard pass to Abe Apraku in the fourth quarter. - Traci Mack |
