SOUTHERN SECTION ROUNDUP: IRVINE EDGES N.P. ON 30-YARD TD PASS IN FINAL SECOND.


The Newbury Park Panthers left their hearts on the field at Irvine High as the Vaqueros scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds remaining to pull out a 29-25 nonleague victory.

The Panthers (5-3) took the lead briefly when Cameron Merrill connected with L. Ray Hawkins for a 37-yard touchdown with 41 seconds left in the game.

Offensively the Panthers were led by Merrill, who completed 19 of 35 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. Hawkins had catches for 111 yards amd Marcus Crawford had 148 all-purpose yards and scored on a 72-yard touchdown pass.

Dipoma was 16 of 30 for 289 yards, but had three interceptions. Viltz had 9 receptions for 157 yards.
