SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFF CAPSULES BASEBALL.DIVISION I Highland (20-6) at Lakewood (25-5) Outlook: Snubbed by the Southern Section playoff seeding committee, Highland took out its frustrations in Tuesday's 10-0 wild-card victory over Channel Islands of Oxnard. Now, the Bulldogs don't figure to have such an easy time. Lakewood, which has 4,000 students, has won four section championships, appeared in seven finals and qualified for the playoffs for 17 straight seasons. DIVISION II Sultana (17-9) at Palmdale (18-6) Outlook: Right-hander Matt Harrington Matt Harrington (born February 1, 1982) is a baseball player who holds the record for the most times being chosen in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. Between 2000 and 2004, Harrington, a top prospect coming out of high school, was chosen in all five drafts, but never signed is starting for Palmdale, so that pretty much closes the book on Sultana. Harrington, expected to be one of the first pitchers taken in June's major-league draft, has a 98 mph fastball. He's 10-0 with a 0.59 ERA and has 113 Ks in 59 innings. Opponents are batting .127 against him. Either Joe Lucero (8-3, 2.20 ERA) or Derek Adams Derek Adams (born June 25, 1975 in Aberdeen) is a Scottish footballer who is currently player-caretaker manager at Ross County. Adams has previously played for Aberdeen, Motherwell, Burnley and Ayr United. (6-3, 3.21) will start for Sultana. The Sultans' best hitters are infielders Jake Mullinax (.455, seven HRs, 34 RBI) and Bobby Miller Bobby Miller (18 March 1950 - 10 June 2006) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for Laois and Timahoe. In June 2006, Miller was managing the Arles-Killeen side from Laois that included Laois county stars Beano McDonald and Donie Brennan when he became ill on the sideline (.355, three HRs, 18 RBI). ``They've got pretty decent pitching, and from what I've heard they're a scrappy team,'' Palmdale coach Lance Pierson said. Keep an eye on: Palmdale's Drew Kennedy, who's batting 529 with six HRs and 40 RBI. Lancaster (15-10) at Hart (21-5) Outlook: These teams are at different ends of the tradition spectrum. Hart is the defending section champion and Lancaster is in its first playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff game - a single play of a sport or other contest; "the game lasted two hours" playoff - any final competition to determine a championship . The Indians' nucleus from last year is back, although player of the year Jamie Shields and Matt Friedrichsen have battled injuries this season. The Eagles would have made the playoffs last year, but had to forfeit 11 games because of an ineligible player. Lancaster lost nine key players from that team and still managed a third-place finish Noun 1. third-place finish - a finish in third place (as in a race) finish - designated event that concludes a contest (especially a race); "excitement grew as the finish neared"; "my horse was several lengths behind at the finish"; "the winner is the team with the in the competitive Golden League. The Eagles must be wary of Hart. Everything the Indians have done this year is misleading because they are just now returning to health and figure to play better in the playoffs. Keep an eye on: Shields returned from a lower-back strain for the final two weeks of the season. Although he was not his usual dominant self, he appears on track to return to his form of last year, when he delivered Hart's first section title. Lancaster's best player, Franky Rosado, is ineligible due to grades. Colton Walter has stolen 15 bases for the Eagles. DIVISION V Vasquez (16-4-1) at Cerritos Valley Christian (14-8) Outlook: Until this season, Vasquez had never made the baseball playoffs - or finished above .500. The Mustangs look to LHP LHP Left-Handed Pitcher LHP Left Hand Path LHP Lighthouse Point (Broward County, Florida city) LHP Left Half-Plane LHP Lead Hollowpoint (bullet) LHP Living History Project LHP Landslide Hazard Program Drew Pirtle to keep things going. (16-2) SOFTBALL DIVISION I Arcadia (15-12) at Highland (18-7) Outlook: Highland, coming off its first Golden League championship in school history, has plenty of momentum and appears to be a firm favorite based on the overall records of both teams. However, Arcadia has played a very tough schedule and all but one of its losses have been close, so the Apaches shouldn't be taken lightly. Highland right-hander Nichole Rawson (16-6, 0.84 ERA) figures to hold down Arcadia. She's given up just 72 hits, eight for extra bases, in 133 innings. She needs to watch out for Linda Vallejo (.388, six doubles) and Erin Bohonus (.280). Keep an eye on: Highland catcher Ashlie D'Errico. She's one of the region's best defensive players, and she's batting .406 with three HRs. DIVISION II Quartz Hill (17-7) at Hart (21-5) Outlook: Quartz Hill eliminated Hart from the playoffs two years ago, so there's a revenge factor in this rematch. Both teams feature excellent RHPs, Amanda Ricker of Quartz Hill and Amanda Fortune of Hart. Ricker, a junior, is 15-4 with a 2.12 ERA, and Illinois-bound Fortune is 11-1 with a 0.16 ERA. Four Quartz Hill starters are batting .408 or better, so Fortune is in for a challenge. Fast Kellie Cox is at .441, freshman Jennifer Curtier is batting .419 with three HRs, four-year starter Sara Moore is hitting .409 and catcher Olaya Salazar is at .408 with 17 RBI. Keep an eye on: Hart catcher Sara Dean, who's solid offensively and defensively. She's batting .360 with five doubles, and runners rarely take an extra base on her. DIVISION V Desert Christian (9-10) at La Reina La Reina (Spanish: "The queen") is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It consistently ranks in the top five communes with the best quality of life in the Metropolitan Region. Keep an eye on: La Reina's Mackenzie Vandergeest. The Arizona-bound catcher is having a ``triple-crown'' season, leading the region in batting average (.565), HRs (seven) and RBI (29). Paraclete (15-10) at Ontario Christian (15-11) Outlook: The Spirits, seeking their seventh appearance in a section final, have won 10 of their last 12, and have good enough pitching to beat anyone. Right-hander Lauren McDonald (9-5, 1.66 ERA) probably will start, but the Spirits also have sophomore RHP Sara Gonzales (6-5, 2.02). Keep an eye on: Paraclete CF Tami Ortiz, one of the area's fastest players. She's batting .357 with 23 SBs. Mojave (18-5) at Alverno (13-3) Outlook: Mojave's Amber Stanton looks to stop the Horizon League champion Jaguars. She's 12-5 with 143 Ks. DIVISION VI Bloomington Christian (10-9) at Boron (15-5) Outlook: Boron seeks to return to the Division VI final, and RHP Jennifer Jenkins (15-4) is key. In the Desert Mountain League, she was 8-0 with a 0.14 ERA and 86 Ks in 51 innings. Bloomington Christian's Erin Rice is 6-1 with a 3.29 ERA, and she's batting .511 with 10 RBI. |
