OXNARD - The Foothill League, which closed its best girls' golf season Tuesday, made a strong showing at the start of the Southern Section playoffs.

Saugus senior Melanie de Leon, last year's Daily News Girls' Golfer of the Year, shot 3-under-par 69 at River Ridge to win medalist honors by five shots.

Camarillo's Robin Lee shared eighth place with a 79, and Marmonte League MVP Amanda Goodman tied for ninth at 80.

De Leon's 69 was the 30th round of par or better by area girls this season - 14 golfers accomplished the feat - and the lowest of five 18-hole totals in that group.

``It was my first round in the 60s, and it felt great,'' said de Leon, who has accepted a full scholarship offer from Nevada and also received offers from San Jose San Jose, city, United States
