SOUTHERN SECTION GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP: LOYOLA FINISHES JUST SHORT IN TITLE BERTH BID; HART 13TH.Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer BEAUMONT - Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. came close, but the veteran Cubs couldn't extend one of their finest boys' golf seasons Thursday, tying for fifth in the Southern Section team championship at PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, Golf Club. ``With five seniors, this was our shot,'' Loyola coach Tom Goepel said after his Cubs came up 10 strokes shy of the section's fourth and final berth in next month's season-ending CIF/SCGA Championship. Their 388 total left them tied with Huntington Beach Huntington Beach, city (1990 pop. 181,519), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast, across from Santa Catalina Island, in an oil-producing area; inc. 1909. Foothill League champion Hart of Newhall, the only other area entry in the 16-team section final at par-72 Champions Course, finished 13th in its first appearance in a section final in four years. Hart, which finished one stroke behind two-time Northern Regional champion Loyola in a Monday qualifier at Soule Park GC in Ojai, arrived at the section final with a distinctly different team makeup than the Cubs. The Indians played Thursday with just one senior - Joey Kroagman, whose 78 was the third-best score of the 12 area entries. Accordingly, Hart coach Aaron Fuller is looking forward to fielding another section-challenging team next season. ``We just picked a bad day to have a bad day,'' said Fuller, whose Indians shot 5-over-par 365 in Monday's qualifier at Soule Park (behind Loyola's winning 364) and posted a school course record 362 this year on that same course. ``We're disappointed, obviously, but it's a learning experience.'' Sophomore Joe Greiner, who will represent Hart in Southern Section individual competition Tuesday at Sterling Hills GC in Camarillo, paced the Indians at Champions Course, shooting 77. Kroagman, Matt Ryan (79), David Cape (90), Brenden Dean (82) and Tony Pauling (86) were the other entries for Hart, which enjoyed one of the best years in its proud golf history. The Indians posted a program-best 39-4 regular-season record, went undefeated in league to win their 13th league title in 14 seasons and qualified three players for individual postseason play; Ryan and Pauling advanced with Greiner. |
