SOUTHERN SECTION GOLF: YOUNG GOLFERS NOT KIDDING AGE IRRELEVANT THESE DAYS AT SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS.Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer Younger and younger. It used to be that most high school golfers would pay their dues, learn the ropes, wait their turn and do all that traditional underclass stuff before making an impact as seniors. For an indication of how far those days have been left behind, just look at the 11 area qualifiers for today's Southern Section individual golf championship. Only three of them are seniors, and four are sophomores. ``More and more kids are playing, and a lot of them are getting instruction and state-of-the-art equipment,'' said Westlake High coach Dave Costley, who will be making an 11th consecutive trip to the section final today, with junior Brett Perry. Today, younger brother Wiki is aware of the following uses of "'Younger Brother":
``Maybe it's hard work,'' the younger Jarvey said of why more golfers are doing well at a younger age. In his case, it's the combination of hard work and good competition: ``I'm playing with a lot of advanced people better than me - like my brother's friends.'' Hart sophomore Greiner, who started playing at age 10 and shot 5-under-par at Vista Valencia's nine-hole Chica course within a year, thinks the work young golfers are able and willing to do to learn the game helps speed the process. ``I used to play Chica four times a day during the summer when I started,'' said the Hart sophomore, who had a best of 69 this season, at par-72 Soule Park. ``I can't say it was dedication, because at that point I was just trying to figure out the game. ``The game keeps getting more complex and you keep learning more as you go along,'' Greiner said, ``and you learn you can progress at almost any time.'' For many young golfers these days, that progress seems to be coming earlier. --Encore: Dowden, Beck, Wilcox and Christianson will be making repeat trips to the section final.
