provided another unforgiving element for the field of 71 girls' golfers Monday at the Southern Section Northern Individual Regional.

Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks' Faith DeGuzman approached the obstacles conservatively.

The strategy paid off for the senior, who finished in fourth place with an 8-over 77 to secure a spot in Thursday's individual final at Diamond Bar Golf Course.

``I played it safe the whole way,'' DeGuzman said. ``I didn't go for anything. I used some woods off the tee and barely pulled out my driver.''

DeGuzman's teammate, Sarah Salvo, also qualified for Thursday's final round with an 81.

``I would be standing over my putt and the ball would start moving, so I had to stop and replace it. It really became a factor,'' said Conway, a junior.

``It was such a hard course, but apparently shooting in the 70s is pretty good.''

Conway, who averaged 240 yards off the tee Monday, expects to benefit in the finals this season from an extra year of experience.

``I was in the (finals) last year and I'm looking forward to it this year,'' Conway said. ``I'm a bit more competitive than I was last year. I was so intimidated in·tim·i·date

``I like the hilly courses because you get better bounces, and I was driving the ball really well.''

Valencia coach Andy Raevouri watched all three of his players advance to the final round, especially Andrea Ferris.

Ferris was on the cusp of elimination and almost missed out on joining teammates Jasnin Samson (84) and Kristen Tayo (86) among the group of 16 locals who advanced to Thursday's competition.

She posted an 89, and earned a spot in the finals by winning a four-person playoff play·off also play-off
