SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS SOCCER: HORNER CAN'T RESCUE PARACLETE.

Byline: Daily News

Margo Horner scored the goal Paraclete High desperately needed to stay alive in its Southern Section Division IV girls' soccer semifinal game Tuesday.

But the Spirits never found the net again and were eliminated 3-1 by second-seeded St. Bonaventure.

Paraclete (19-3-1) was on the defensive throughout the first half and trailed 2-0 before Horner was taken down in the penalty area in the 39th minute of the first half. The junior then scored her third penalty kick goal in two games, slicing the deficit in half at halftime.

``That made us think, `Hey, we're in this game again.' We knew we've been a comeback team,'' Horner said.

The Spirits' best chance for a tying goal sailed over the crossbar on Horner's direct free kick from just outside the penalty area.

The Spirits had 17 shots on goal, but many came with St. Bonaventure closely covering Paraclete's best scorers.

``We could have used about 17 more shots,'' Spirits coach Deana Jacoby said. ``(The Seraphs) got all over anybody who was close to the goal. Their goalie (Nicki Riddout) got a little more aggressive.''
