SOUTHERN SECTION DIV. IV SOFTBALL: CELEBRATION TIME EAGLES RALLY YET AGAIN, CAPTURE SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP CHAMINADE 2, WARREN 1.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News

IRVINE -- Brianna Saraceno threw her arms in the air, screamed and tossed her mitt. Then she jumped into a dogpile near the pitcher's circle.

It was the appropriate culmination of an emotional season for the Chaminade High of West Hills softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team, which savored every second after defeating Warren of Downey 2-1 in the Southern Section Div. IV championship game Friday at Bill Barber This article is about Bill Barber, Canadian ice hockey player. For Bill Barber, American tuba player with Miles Davis, see Bill Barber (musician).

Chaminade (23-6) was making its first title appearance since 2000 and won its first championship since 1999.

Warren (23-6) was making its first championship game appearance since its 1975 championship season and took a 19-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

Chaminade pitcher Brianna Barth (23-5) allowed one unearned run and seven hits.

Warren scored its only run in the second on Barth's throwing error. She redeemed herself in the fifth, hitting a double down the left-field line to score Saraceno, and then scoring the game-winning run on sophomore catcher Brittany Cervantes' single to left.

Chaminade was 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  before Barth's hit.

in the sixth, when a freak play helped Barth and the Eagles escape a bases-loaded no-outs situation.

The key play came with one out, when pitcher Erika Espino (14-2) hit what appeared to be single through the right side of the infield, but the ball hit Armento, resulting in a batter's interference single, which no one could advance on.

``You make your own destiny, and sometimes you can get a little help,'' Chaminade coach Jon Ellinghouse said. ``We were lucky to have that play, no question about it, but championships aren't based on luck. These girls played some great ball this year and they beat some great teams. They came together as a team and I couldn't be prouder of them.''
