Division III (or DIII) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the United States.
prelims Friday at Long Beach City College confirmed that, as Shields advanced to next weekend's Southern Section finals.

And that was just one highlight on a night dominated by the Wolverines.

Harvard-Westlake had an area-best nine individual qualifiers, four as top seeds. The top nine in each event advance to next Saturday's section finals at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. It was named after Rancho Los Cerritos, a ranch that served prominently in the region in the 19th century. .

Shields was one of three local representatives advancing in the boys' 400 meters. His time of 49.09 seconds was good enough to earn him the second seed. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks' Cary Harris (49.53) and Newbury park's Justin Cox (50.66) will join Shields in trying to top No. 1 seed Dane Hodgins of San Luis Obispo San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856.  (48.65).

``I did what I wanted to do today,'' said Shields, who was 10th in the 200 (22.39).

His goal for the 400 final is to break the 48-second barrier. His personal best this season is 48.78. Not bad for someone who didn't decide to join the team until late February, because, he said, ``I got bored.''

Shields staved off boredom Friday by rooting his teammates to victory when he wasn't running.

``We've had a great year,'' Harvard-Westlake junior Lindsay Flacks said. ``We just wanted to get as many people in (to the finals) as we could. So far, so good.''

Flacks was among those leading the way on the girls' side. Her 11.06.30 finish in the 3,200 earned Flacks the top seed for the event, in which teammate Katie DeWitt also advanced.

Flacks had the meet's second-fastest time in the 1,600 at 5:08.91 but is seeded fourth because she didn't win her heat, which was won by overall leader Jenna Kingma of San Luis Obispo (5:08.30).

Harvard-Westlake sophomore Anna Farias-Eisner won her heat at 5:09.77 to qualify as the No. 2 seed.

Farias-Eisner claimed the top seed in the girls' 800 (2:18.56).

``I'm pretty happy,'' said Flacks, who has yet to run at full strength as she is recovering from a groin groin, in oceanography: see coast protection.  injury suffered in a fall during cross country season. ``I've been coming back from the injury, so I'm easing back. Every time out is a little better. ... It's still there, but once you get into the race, you don't even think about it.''
