WALNUT- Phillip Reid of Rio Mesa High of Oxnard, and Mark Matusak and David Torrence of Loyola High of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  are going the distance for their teams.

The three doubled in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters in the Southern Section Div. II preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Reid won his 1,600 and 3,200 heats in 4 minutes, 12.97 seconds and 9:10.73, respectively, for the top qualifying marks. Matusak and Torrence, who teamed on Loyola's state Division I cross country team in the fall, also advanced in both races to the finals of the nine-runner field.

Division III (or DIII) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the United States.
. The distance races figure to play a pivotal role in the determination of the team title.

Rio Mesa's hopes will rely on Reid, who won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters in last year's Div. I finals, and senior Justin Johnson, who was one of four jumpers to clear a leading 6-foot-4 in the high jump and a qualifier in the 110 high hurdles at 14.57. Reid also teamed with Johnson on Rio Mesa's 1,600 relay to a runner-up heat finish.

The preliminaries were a trial run for Reid, the state leader in the 1,600 at 4:09.44 and the Div. II leader in the 3,200 at 8:58.45. Reid's marks on Friday were the fastest since setting his career bests in the 1,600 in the Arcadia Invitational five weeks ago and in the 3,200 in the Pasadena Games in late March.

The 3,200 felt a lot better than the mile. It felt really smooth. I think that I am back.''

Matusak, a sophomore, won the second of two 3,200 heats in 9:17.16 and finished second in his 1,600 heat to Reid in 4:14.79, a hundredth of a second off his lifetime best, for the No. 2 qualifying mark. Torrence was a heat winner in the 1,600 in 4:15.08 for the third-best mark and third in a 3,200 heat in 9:16.95 behind Reid and Cypress' David Napper.

 were among eight vaulters to clear 14-6. Sophomore Kenyon Churchill was the sixth-best qualifier in the high jump at 6-2.

Moorpark sophomore Jeanne Newman qualified for four events, moving on in the 100 at 12.09 for the third-best mark, the fastest qualifier in the 200 at 24.90 and in the 400 and 1,600 relays. Westlake seniors Kenneth Mackins and Daniella Padilla qualified in two individual events each. Mackins advanced in the 100 (10.97) and 200 (22.31). Padilla advanced in the 800 (2:17.68) and 1,600 (5:09.11).
