SOUTHERN SECTION CROSS COUNTRY PRELIMS ROYAL, SAUGUS ADVANCE PARACLETE BARELY ADVANCES TO FINALS.

More than 30 local cross country teams advanced in the postseason Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

, while others saw their seasons come to an end at the Southern Section prelims in Walnut.

For teams like the Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  boys, ranked No.3 in the nation by Harrier magazine, the event was a mere formality en route to a Southern Section finals berth.

But for others, like the Paraclete of Lancaster boys, just qualifying for the Nov. 18 finals proved to be a dramatic feat.

Paraclete's starting five clocked 88 minutes, 3 seconds on the hilly 3- mile course to place seventh in Heat 1 of the boys' Div. IV race.

With only six teams from each heat guaranteed a spot in the finals, Paraclete secured the division's only at-large berth by virtue of finishing six seconds faster than Salesian of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  -- the seventh-place finisher in Heat 2.

 clocked 16:17 to place sixth overall, and first on the team for the Spirits, who advanced despite coming into Saturday unranked in state Div. IV.

The competition wasn't nearly as fierce for the two-time defending state Div. I champion Royal boys, which clocked 78:35 to place first among all Div. I qualifiers despite competing without No. 3 runner Danny Benson. Benson is nursing a hip injury, but is expected to be back for the state finals, Nov. 25 in Fresno.

Another strong performance came from the Saugus girls, ranked No. 7 in the nation, whose clocking of 92:45 was fastest among all Div. I qualifiers. Saugus senior Shannon Murakami, the defending state Div. I champion, finished first among Div. I runners with a time of 17:39.

Nike Team Nationals (NTN) is an invitational cross country meet that serves as the unofficial team national championship of United States high school cross country. It was designed to heighten competition between high school cross country teams nationwide.
 California Region, are expected to finish first at next week's finals, which will also take place at Mt. SAC.

II: Loyola (81:08), Rio Mesa (82:58), Westlake (83:07); Div. III: Oak Park (82:45), St. Francis (84:28); Div. IV: Harvard-Westlake (86:09), Oaks Christian (86:14), Notre Dame (86:14), Crespi (86:59), Paraclete (88:03); Div. V: Flintridge Prep (85:58), Oakwood (88:51).

GIRLS -- Div. I: Saugus (92:45), Crescenta Valley (94:41), Royal (96:34), Highland (98:21); Div. II: Simi Valley (96:05), Moorpark (98:17); Div. III: Oak Park (94:29); Div.IV: Marlborough (98:05), La Reina (103:14), Paraclete (103:26), Flintridge Sacred Heart (104:44), Desert Christian (104:48), Louisville (105:35), Notre Dame (108:21); Div. V: Flintridge Prep (103:09), Bell-Jeff (110:40).
