SOUTHERN SECTION CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS: LOYOLA BEST IN DIVISION I OAK PARK TEAMS DEFEND TITLES.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

WALNUT - A full two years had passed since the Loyola High of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  boys' cross country team failed to qualify for the 2000 state championship by just six-tenths of a second at the Southern Section Division I finals. But Cubs senior David Torrence never forgot the frustration of that day.

With one spectacular race Saturday, Loyola finally avenged a·venge

The Cubs left no doubt about the result this season, downing Dana Hills Dana Lynne Goetz (May 6, 1964 – July 15, 1996) was an American actress and voice actor who was best known for her raspy voice and child-like appearance. The surname of her stage name of Dana Hill was in fact her mother's maiden name.  80-124 as sophomore Mark Matusak took second and Torrence fifth to earn all-section honors.

And in contrast to the past two years, Loyola was able to enjoy a jubilant celebration after hearing the results at the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. ``This year, it just all came together,'' said Torrence, whose team also failed to qualify last year after finishing seventh. ``We were determined we weren't going to let this one go past us. To do this as a senior, I can't describe it. It's just unbelievable.''

Diaz said he hoped before the race his team merely could compete with top-seeded Poly of Long Beach. He told his runners to try for the title, but not sacrifice second place as a result. Instead, the Cubs were able to take advantage of a subpar sub·par

, who successfully defended their Division IV titles. The Eagles boys were especially impressive in defeating Tri-Valley League rival Fillmore 39-52, as senior Igor Tregub took fourth in 15 minutes, 52 seconds and sophomore Ken Brook followed two seconds behind in fifth.

Only two weeks ago, Fillmore defeated the Oak Park boys in the league meet. But the Eagles managed to return the favor Saturday. And Oak Park coach Kevin Smith said he expects the schools to battle again next Saturday at the state finals in Fresno.

``We got it here, and we've told our kids, and Fillmore's kids, that it's on again next week,'' Smith said. ``We've made each other better throughout the year. They're definitely a championship team as well.''

The Division II boys' race featured a duel duel, prearranged armed fight with deadly weapons, usually swords or pistols, between two persons concerned with a point of honor. The duel may have originated in the wager of battle, an early mode of trial in which an accused person fought with his accuser under  between Rio Mesa of Oxnard senior Phillip Reid and Woodbridge of Irvine junior Michael Haddan. Each entered the race as individuals and figure to compete twice more the rest of the season, including the Foot Locker Foot Locker, Inc. It is the successor corporation to the F.W. Woolworth Company (“Woolworth’s”).  West Regionals in December.

On Saturday, Reid took the lead at the 2-mile mark and won by five seconds over Haddan. Reid's time of 14:43 not only was the fastest of the morning but tied for the ninth-best time ever recorded on the 2.91-mile Mt. SAC course.

Meanwhile, Harvard-Westlake of Studio City freshman Bridget Ballard turned in a stunning result Saturday. With Lindsay Flacks held out of the Division IV race with a groin injury, Ballard took the opportunity to more than fill in for the standout junior. Ballard led from start to finish and won in 18:06, the seventh-best time ever for a freshman.

But it also was a disappointing day for several of the area's best teams. Top-ranked Canyon finished sixth on both the boys' and girls' side with several of the Cowboys runners bothered by colds. Both teams advanced to the state finals, though, and will get a second chance next weekend.
