WALNUT -- The whispers in the crowd began as soon as the state's top-ranked boys' cross country team stepped on the course.

``I sometimes hear some of that before races. It's an honor that people think so highly of me and the rest of the team,'' said Cybulski, who finished first among Div.I runners with a clocking of 14 minutes, 54 seconds on the hilly hill·y

Andrews finished second with a time of 14:57 for the Highlanders, whose top five also included Jun Reichl (10th, 15:18), Alex Routh (25th, 15:41) and Otto Cipolla (81st, 16:33).

Trabuco Hills -- ranked No.2 in California -- will again pose the most significant challenge.

``We didn't come into this race thinking about excuses. We came here to win,'' said Andrews, who made a strong push in the final mile Saturday to pass at least five other runners. ``It would be great to have everyone healthy for nextweek, but we'll remain confident regardless.''

Highland of Palmdale's Jeremy Acosta also qualified for the Div.I state final with an 11th-place time of 15:19.

In other boys' races, Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge nearly pulled off a shocking upset of Woodcrest Christian of Riverside in the Div.V race.

The Rebels clocked 84:09 to finish within four points of Woodcrest Christian (58, 82:37), which is the top-ranked team in state Div.V and a perennial divisional power.

Flintridge Prep, which advances to the state meet to face Woodcrest Christian again next week, was led by Paul Weitekamp (sixth, 16:31) and Navjit Dullet (seventh, 16:32). Flintridge Prep's top five all finished in the top28.

``We were a little mad coming into the race that Woodcrest Christian was predicted to dominate us,'' said Weitekamp, whose Rebels are the No.4-ranked team in state Div.V. ``We decided to go after them, and we can't wait to race them again next week.''
