It is just that there are still miles to go - they hope - before the season is over.

``As long as the team keeps one goal for our team in mind, then I think we'll have great races,'' top runner Dylan Jaedtke said. ``We just need to stay humble.''

Royal advanced to the Southern Section Finals, next Saturday at Mt. SAC. Next week's winners move on to the state meet Nov. 27 in Fresno.

in their race early Saturday. They ran in the first heat of the day, at 7:45 a.m., and were gone before the rest of the Div. I heats had finished.

Jaedtke won the race in 15 minutes, 13 seconds, the third-fastest Div. I time of the day. Mike Cybulski and Jason Pedersen also finished inside the top 10. Royal's top six - Jaedtke, Cybulski, Pedersen, Matt Gulden, Ben Capper cap·per

The Highlanders have enough depth to rest runners when needed, and Saturday was no exception.

``It seems the way it's been so far for us, when somebody has an off day, somebody else always steps up,'' Jaedtke said.

The Highlanders finished more than two minutes ahead of second-place Canyon of Canyon Country in the first heat. The top four Div. I teams from each of four heats advanced to the finals, as did all individuals in the top six.

Royal impressed second-place Canyon.

``The boys finished, and they wanted to know, 'How far behind Royal were we?' '' Canyon coach Paul Broneer said. ``That's a big margin, and they didn't even run their full lineup.''

Jaedtke was among nearly 20 runners in a tight pack that didn't thin out until the first mile was done. He worked the hills and pulled away from Camarillo's Ted Price, who finished second in 15:17. Price qualified for the finals as an individual.

The race was important to Jaedtke because he hadn't run as well as he would have liked the last time he was on the course.

``I wanted to run around 15:14, going easier than I did at the Mt. SAC Invite,'' Jaedtke said.

Canyon's girls matched the boys, placing second in their Div. I heat. The Cowboys' trio of Andrea Bischop, Kalyn English and Brenda Cohen cohen

Local runners made out well in the toughest Div. I girls race, which featured No. 2 Fountain Valley Fountain Valley, city (1990 pop. 53,691), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1957. ``It's good,'' Saugus coach Christian Standley said. ``I'll look at the rest of the times this week and figure out what we need to do (to make the state meet).''

Peninsula's Brittany Morreale finished first in the heat in 17:35. Highland of Palmdale's Alyssa Craft was second and Simi Valley's Anna Sperry came in third.

Craft and Sperry qualified for the finals as individuals.
