WALNUT - Even the video replay couldn't determine who crossed the finish line first. That's how close Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge's Kathryn Iwata and Chadwick of Rancho Palos Verdes' Kelly Owen finished as they battled for fifth place in Saturday's Southern Section Div. V girls' cross-country final. The unofficial results, posted minutes after the race, showed Owen finishing one second ahead of Iwata, giving Chadwick a 69-70 victory over the team it defeated in the Prep League final. ``I came in the chute first and I thought I finished ahead of (Owen), but then they took it away and I was kind of disappointed,'' Iwata said. Flintridge Prep, ranked No. 2 in the division behind Chadwick, gathered alone in a secluded area off the course to ponder the defeat. The Rebels accepted the second-place plaque minutes later. Video from a camera at the finish line is consulted before race results become official. It took more than an hour after the race for officials to rule Iwata and Owens tied for fifth. ``If that camera was on the other side (of the finish line), my girl wins,'' said unconvinced Chadwick coach George Ramos. The tie between Iwata and Owen left the two teams tied for first with 69 points. Flintridge Prep earned its first Southern Section title because its sixth finisher, sophomore Annie Ruch, finished 38th, two spots ahead of Chadwick's Lena Vaynberg. ``It's really just unbelievable,'' Iwata said. ``It's really shocking to think that we went from being second to winning. But we have one more race and Chadwick is still a great team.'' The Div. V race wasn't the only one where confusion almost kept a local representative from winning.
