The unlikeliest of stars was needed to give the Harvard-Westlake of Studio City boys' water team the championship-game berth that had seemed so likely until Wednesday afternoon.

``I've always imagined this,'' Zepfel said after emerging from a bench- clearing mob in the pool. ``It turned out just like I imagined.''

Harvard-Westlake, which advances to the final Tuesday at Belmont Plaza, never led until Will Hindle-Katel broke a 6-6 tie late in the fourth quarter. Justin Rappel, who scored a game-high five goals, put the Wolverines (26-2) up 8-7 with 45 seconds remaining, but Derrek Danna scored for El Toro (23-7) 25 seconds later to send the game to overtime.

Rappel added game-tying goals late in both the first and second overtime periods. Zepfel fired in the deciding shot 27 seconds into the fourth overtime.

``I was really nervous,'' Zepfel said. ``I didn't think I was even going to get in. Then I got the pass and luckily it went in.''

Goalkeeper Jay Connolly helped keep Harvard-Westlake in the game with 20 saves.

``We were not mentally prepared,'' said La Canada's Chris Wehrle, who scored the team's last goal to tie it 5-5 with 2:20 left in the third quarter. ``We haven't seen (Peninsula of Rolling Hills Rolling hills are like a mountain chain, only a "hill chain" of hills that roll on and on continually. La Canada jumped out to an early lead when Matt Blatchley scored a goal 1:31 into the game. However, Peninsula erased the deficit as Jimmy Ogunmola scored two of his three goals to put the Panthers up 4-2.

Jordan Thompson, Devon Borisoff and Tom Dodson each scored a goal for La Canada (22-7).

``We had three good quarters of play,'' said La Canada goalkeeper Kevin Coyne Kevin Coyne was a singer, composer, writer and painter.
