The Warriors' reward: a first-round game against the team with the second-most victories in the division.

With a fluke goal and its customary staunch defense, Westlake survived Hart of Newhall in a 1-0 victory Saturday to open the Southern Section playoffs.

``Before the game, we thought this would be a harder game than the next round,'' Westlake defender Kyle Dagan said. ``Everyone was emotional and pumped up for the game.''

The victory was part of a Marmonte League sweep over Verb 1. sweep over - overcome, as with emotions or perceptual stimuli

The goal came midway through the first half off a free kick from midfield. A Westlake player headed the ball in the air, it glanced off a Hart player and bounced in front of the goal. Westlake's Spencer Hartner and Hart goalkeeper Jose Esquivel both went for the ball, collided, and Hartner was able to punch the ball into the net.

When the final whistle sounded, Westlake players shouted out, ``18,'' for their area-best 18th shutout of the season.

``We go into each game thinking about a shutout,'' Dagan said. ``If they don't score, we can't lose.''

Hart (21-4-2) applied pressure much of the second half, getting its best scoring opportunity when Eric Tanner hit the crossbar with seven minutes left. The Indians couldn't get off a shot in the final five minutes.

``We outplayed them, and they got a lucky goal,'' Hart coach Louis Romero said. ``We just couldn't put the ball in the net. I think we should have won the game, so it's pretty frustrating frus·trate
