SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS' BASKETBALL: HART EXECUTES PLAN TO PERFECTION DEFENSE SENDS INDIANS TO I-AA FINAL HART 53, DIAMOND BAR 41.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

WALNUT - There was one only logical strategy if Hart High of Newhall was to defeat favored Diamond Bar in the Southern Section Div. I-AA basketball semifinals Tuesday night.

The visiting Indians needed to shut down high-scoring Collin Robinson, Diamond Bar's heavily recruited guard, who entered with a 25.4 points-per-game average and was coming off a 42-point performance in the quarterfinals.

That's what Hart did.

``Coach just gave me the challenge and said to just go out and guard him,'' Russell said. ``As long as we stopped him from hitting 3-pointers, we knew we'd be in good shape.

``This is the best feeling in the world.''

Hart (19-12), which advanced to a boys' basketball final for the first time since 1959, plays top-seeded Etiwanda (29-1) on Saturday at the Pond in Anaheim. Game time will be announced today.

Wolfe scored 21 points, six in the final two minutes.

Diamond Bar (23-8) trailed most of the game but opened a six-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Hart quickly reasserted itself: Wolfe hit a jumper The simplest form of an on/off switch.  Onwuachi added a pair of free throws to give the Indians a 41-40 advantage.

Herman scored 14 points, Corey Chefalo added eight, and Russell seven.

Hart students stormed the floor after the final buzzer.

``Well, we get Etiwanda. But so what?'' Kelly said. ``We're just going to go there and see what we can do.

``I think it's great for the kids, because we came into the playoffs as a third-place team. This is really a testament to team players.''
