SOUTHERN SECTION BASEBALL PLAYOFFS: LIGHT-HITTING CHAMINADE FALLS IN FIRST ROUND.

For most of the season, Kyle Thompson's pitching was enough to get past a lack of clutch hitting by Chaminade of West Hills' baseball team. But when Thompson had an off day Thursday, there was no overcoming the Eagles' slumping bats.

The Mission League co-champion was eliminated from the postseason with a 4-2 upset by visiting Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  in the first round of the Southern Section Div. II playoffs.

The Eagles (21-8), who spent the season ranked in the division's top 10, were held to four hits and stranded six base runners, two of them at third.

    Chaminade cut the deficit in half on a two-run home run by Casey Haerther - his ninth homer of the season - in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles managed just one baserunner the rest of the game. Haerther was on deck when it ended.

    ``We had chances, but we just haven't been able to string the hits together lately,'' Gubicza said. ``We were just hoping to get Haerther up there again.''

    Santa Barbara junior right-hander Bryce Uhrig (8-1) went six innings with four strikeouts, two walks and four hits allowed. Vinnie Agapito retired the Eagles in order in the seventh for the save.

    --Camarillo 4, Mira Costa 0: Senior right-hander Jeff Bricker pitched his second shutout of the season, striking out six and allowing six hits as Camarillo defeated host Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach Manhattan Beach, city (1990 pop. 32,063), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1912.     --Vasquez 11, Viewpoint 1: China McCarney worked five innings, giving up five hits, striking out eight, walking none and hitting three batters, to lead Vasquez of Acton to a first-round victory over visiting Viewpoint of Calabasas (16-9).

    His counterpart, Willy Blackman (4-4), gave up eight hits in five innings, with four walks and two strikeouts. Blackman had two hits, one a double.

    McCarney doubled and singled and Curtis Leavitt had a two-run homer and a single.

    --Campbell Hall 12, San Jacinto San Jacinto, river, c.130 mi (210 km) long, rising in SE Texas as the West Fork and flowing S to Galveston Bay.
