Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

FOUNTAIN VALLEY Fountain Valley, city (1990 pop. 53,691), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1957. Chiefly residential, Fountain Valley also has diverse manufactures, including apparel, computer equipment, semiconductors, and medical equipment. A U.S. navy helicopter facility is there.  - Chris Rueckert wrestles because he loves the head-to-head competition.

Head butts are a different story.

 Saturday at Fountain Valley High.

Rueckert won the match 5-1 - clinching a berth at next weekend's state championships in Stockton - but he was never the same. Heavily bandaged over his right eye and in great pain, Rueckert followed with a 3-1 loss to eventual champion Chris Lopez, then a 6-0 loss to North Torrance's Jesse Juarez.

Rueckert (43-3), ranked No. 1 by the Daily News (all weight classes), defeated El Dorado's Danny Pierro for fifth place.

``My eye was bugging me,'' Rueckert said after the loss to Magana. ``Before the match they wanted me to get stitches, but I didn't want to lose (by default). But I feel good I'm going to state. That's everyone's goal here.''

Scott Speakman of Rio Mesa of Oxnard was the region's only other wrestler to qualify for the state meet. He finished fourth at 140 pounds.

The wrestling season ended for 10 other locals who failed to place among the top eight in their respective 24-man brackets.

Speakman (53-7, 36 pins) clinched a state berth by outpointing Lorezo Butanda of Northview in the 140-pound quarterfinals. A 4-1 loss to Frank Richmond of Kennedy of La Palma La Pal·ma

prevented Speakman from reaching the final.

``(Richmond) just wrestled better than me,'' Speakman said. ``My arms were tired, and he's pretty good. I still go to state, so I'm fine. I don't get mad when I lose as long as I try hard.''

Speakman rebounded with a 9-4 victory over Brian Lamay of Capistrano Valley before finishing fourth by losing 10-0 to Torrance's Maurice Washington Maurice Washington is a Republican member of the Nevada Senate, representing Washoe County District 2 (map) since 1994. External links

Mortensen won consecutive consolation matches before falling 7-5 to Santa Ana's Gilbert Melendez Gilbert "El Niño" Melendez (born April 12, 1982) is a Mexican-American professional mixed martial arts fighter from Santa Ana, CA.
