SOUTHERN LIVING INDUCTS HALL OF FAME MEMBERS AND ANNOUNCES NEW COOKBOOK SERIES

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- Southern Living magazine recently rolled out the red carpet for 12 charter members of The Southern Living Community Cookbook Hall of Fame.
These 12 were the first to be selected for a special Hall of Fame cookbook collection that will be offered by Oxmoor House, which publishes all Southern Living books.
"We plan to make the Hall of Fame an ongoing collection, which will continue to include the best community cookbooks in the country," said Southern Living Editor John Floyd.
Besides being selected as charter members of this new collection, each of the 12 winners also will be in a future issue of Southern Living. The magazine's home economists will test and update selected Hall of Fame recipes, which will appear in Southern Living at a future date.
The winning southern cookbooks and their sponsoring organizations are as follows: "A Taste of Georgia," Newnan Junior Service League Inc.; "Bay Leaves," The Junior Service League of Panama City (Fla.) Inc.; "Mountain Measures," Junior League of Charleston, West Virginia, Inc.; "Out of Our League," The Junior League of Greensboro (N.C.) Inc.; "Recipes and Reminiscences of New Orleans," The Parents' Club of Ursuline Academy Inc.; "Southern Accent," The Junior League of Pine Bluff (Ark.) Inc.; "Southern Sideboards," Junior League of Jackson, Miss.; and "The Gasparilla Cookbook," The Junior League of Tampa (Fla.) Inc.
Winners from other parts of the country include "A Taste of Aloha," The Junior League of Honolulu Inc.; "A Taste of Oregon," Junior League of Eugene (Ore.) Inc.; "Three Rivers Cookbook I," Child Health Association of Sewickley (Pa.) Inc.; and "Thru the Grapevine," The Junior League of Greater Elmira-Corning (N.Y.) Inc.
Representatives of the winning cookbooks received an all-expense- paid trip to Southern Living headquarters in Birmingham, Nov. 3-4. On Nov. 3, Southern Living hosted a banquet to honor the inductees. The magazine presented an honorarium and a commemorative plaque to representatives of each winning cookbook. The following day, these guests enjoyed a luncheon and a guided tour of Southern Living headquarters, including a visit to the test kitchens and photography studios.
Hall of Fame cookbooks were selected by the foods editors of Southern Living and Oxmoor House. To be nominated, a cookbook had to be produced by a non-profit, fund-raising organization which uses the proceeds to support philanthropic projects. Nominees were then judged for their story lines, sales and popularity, design and graphic appeal, recipe content and recipe clarity.
"Each of these organizations has done an excellent job of celebrating the culinary heritage of its region, while making a real difference in its community through the spirit of volunteer work," Floyd said.
The Hall of Fame cookbook collection will help support that community service. Oxmoor House will continue to send proceeds (based on print quantities) back to the local organizations, which can use these funds to support their many worthwhile projects. Also, Southern Living will tell its readers how to order these books directly from the local organizations, so that retail sales can continue to benefit individual communities.
Southern Living and Oxmoor House are divisions of Southern Progress Corporation, which also publishes Cooking Light, Southern Accents and Progressive Farmer magazines. The Birmingham-based subsidiary of Time Inc. Ventures is the largest regional publisher of magazines and books in the country.
