SOUTHERN ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL WINS BID IN ARGENTINA

ATLANTA, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A consortium led by Southern Electric International Inc. has been selected to purchase a 59 percent interest in a hydroelectric generating facility on the border of the Rio Negro and Neuquen provinces of Argentina, Southern Electric Tom Boren announced today.
Southern Electric, a subsidiary of The Southern Company (NYSE: SO), builds, owns, and operates power production facilities and provides a broad range of technical services to industrial companies and utilities in the U.S. and international markets.
The Southern Company is also the parent firm of five electric utilities: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric. Together, these companies make up one of the largest investor-owned electric utility groups in the United States.
A Southern Electric affiliate and its partners will purchase 59 percent of the common shares of Hidroelectrica Alicura, S.A., which operates 1,000 megawatts of capacity, from Hidroelectrica Norpatagonica, S.A., a state-owned utility.
The Argentine government will retain 39 percent of the shares, and 2 percent will be distributed to employees of the companies.
Southern Electric's local partner is the Bemberg Group, a leading Argentine group that controls Quinsa, a beverage group that EuroMoney magazine mentions as Argentina's best managed company. Another consortium partner is Harza Engineering Co., a U.S. consulting firm that will assist in ongoing technical support.
"Southern Electric is pleased to become part of the utility industry in Argentina," Boren said. "We look forward to working with the government and with the employees of these companies to enhance efficiency, economic development, and service to customers."
