SOUTHERN ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL ADVANCES IN SELECTION PROCESS FOR POWER PROJECT

ATLANTA, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- A consortium led by Southern Electric International, Inc. has advanced in a selection process to develop an electric-power generation project for Commonwealth Edison (NYSE: CWE), Southern Electric President Tom Boren announced today.
Southern Electric's consortium, if selected for the project, will develop, construct, and own the 216-megawatt combined-cycle cogeneration facility in North Chicago, Ill.
In addition to providing electricity to Commonwealth Edison, the gas-fired power station will produce steam for use by an industrial facility.
Southern Electric's partner in the venture is Louis Dreyfus Energy Corporation.
The facility, to be known as the Lakeside Power Project, will include a combustion turbine, a heat recovery steam generator, and a steam turbine generator.
Southern Electric, a subsidiary of The Southern Company (NYSE: SO), designs, builds, owns and operates power production facilities and provides a broad range of technical services to industrial companies and utilities in the U.S. and international markets.
The Southern Company is also the parent firm of five electric utilities: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power, and Savannah Electric. Together, these companies make up one of the largest investor-owned electric utility groups in the United States.
Southern Electric will manage the development of the Lakeside Power Project and operate the facility.
Louis Dreyfus Energy, headquartered in Wilton, Conn., is engaged in oil and gas exploration and production, petroleum refining, transportation, and terminal operations. Louis Dreyfus will be the long-term fuel supplier for the project.
Black & Veatch, headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., will be the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
Commonwealth Edison is expected to complete an evaluation of the proposed generation projects by early April.
Construction could begin by 1994, with the facility beginning commercial operation as early as 1997.
