Moorpark freshman Tai Battle is ready to start a streak of her own in the weight events after winning the discus and hammer and finishing second in the shot put in the state championship qualifying meet.

Veldman, a sophomore transfer from Utah State, had a hand in 30 points to help the Raiders finish fourth in the team competition with 74 points, a point behind third-place Cerritos. Who could blame Veldman for taking a break at the snack bar for a hot dog instead of jogging to midfield to accept his medal at the awards podium.

``I am not the kind of person who likes to be in the spotlight,'' Veldman said. ``I am sure the people have seen enough of me already.''

It will be a different story for Battle when she competes in the state meet at American River College American River College (ARC) is a two-year community college located in the southern edge of unincorporated Foothill Farms in Sacramento County, California.

The college was opened in 1955 as American River Junior College, on the site of the old Grant Technical College.

Battle, who scored 26 of her teams 38 points to help Moorpark finish seventh, attended high school at Will C. Wood High in Vacaville and turned down offers to compete at nearby UC Davis, Sacramento State, American River and two-time defending state junior college champion Sacramento City.

``I had a lot of people tell me that I was making a mistake by coming down to Los Angeles,'' Battle said. ``I am very much looking forward to proving them wrong.''

There was no question about Battle's dominance of the throws on Saturday. Battle, who set a school record of 166-6 in the hammer at the Mt. SAC Relays last month, won the hammer by nearly 14 feet at 152-9 and had a six-foot cushion in the discus with a 149-1 effort.
