SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP: FLINTRIDGE PREP STAR WINS CIF/SCGA WITH 66.Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer MURRIETA - Tiger Woods Stadler was born in San Diego, California and attended La Jolla High School. and Brett Kanda. Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge senior Kanda joined the ranks of the most accomplished high school golfers in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, history Thursday, winning the CIF/SCGA championship at SCGA SCGA Southern California Golf Association SCGA Software Carrier Group Alarm Golf Club in Murrieta. His 6-under-par 66 in the 35th annual Southern California final topped a field of 124, including defending champion defending champion n (SPORT) → defensor/a m/f del título defending champion n (Sport) → champion(ne) en titre Rickie Fowler of Murrieta Valley (who shot a tournament record 62 last season), advancing Kanda to Wednesday's state championship at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach. Like previous CIF/SCGA champions Woods (in 1991, for Western of Anaheim), Mickelson (University of San Diego, 1987) and Stadler (La Jolla, 1971), who all went on to win major championships on the PGA Tour, Kanda was at the top of his game for what he called his biggest victory. His 6-under-par 66, good for a one-shot margin over Cameron Tringale of Mission Viejo, included eight birdies - one on a sand save from a bunker - a near hole-in-one and 16 greens in regulation, running his numbers in that statistical category to 50 of 54 in postseason play. The three-time CIF/SCGA finalist ran his overall season scoring total to 12-under par with a round that included an 8-iron shot that bounced off the flagstick flag·stick n. A removable pole with a flag marking the placement of each hole on the putting greens of a golf course. to set up a 2-inch birdie putt on the 160-yard, par-3 sixth hole. ``I made most of my putts and made some lucky ones,'' Kanda said, ``but you shoot 66, you're going to get some luck.'' He got that on the 189-yard, par-3 16th hole. ``I hit a cold shank shank (shangk) 1. leg (1). 2. crus ( 2). shank n. The part of the human leg between the knee and ankle. , but I got up and down for par,'' Kanda said of that stroke-saving hole on a day his one-shot victory margin made him the second CIF/SCGA individual champion in area history. No area player has shot lower in the event. Flintridge Prep coach Bob Loughrie, who has had two previous trophy-winners (fifth place Russell Surber in 1998 and sixth-place Jeff Osborn in 2001) called it a big deal just to qualify for the CIF/SCGA and off the charts to win it - even as well as Kanda has played all season. ``I do not take any of this for granted,'' said Loughrie, who seemed quietly proud to the point of bursting. ``I've been around too long for that. But I really am glad I was able to come to watch this. He was like a Swiss army knife today - he had a tool for whatever situation he was in.'' Kanda was the only area golfer, of 17 in the event, to advance to the state championship. James Dalthorp III of Oaks Christian of Westlake Village was first alternate, finishing seventh at 69. Louis Amira of Valencia and Andrew Ok of Granada Hills shot 71, Amira with a round that included six birdies. Other area scorers included Nick Geyer of Viewpoint of Calabasas (73), Danny Hoffenberg of Royal of Simi Valley and Mat Shin of Kennedy of Granada Hills (both 74), Kevin Bognot of Monroe of North Hills (76), Joe Greiner of Hart of Newhall and Andy Nakmanee of Grant of Van Nuys (both 77), and Thomas Lodwig of El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:
