SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON AND BUSINESS GROUPS JOIN THE SEA DIVERS IN KING HARBOR CLEAN-UP

REDONDO BEACH, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 400 volunteers will be searching for trash instead of treasure at the Second Annual King Harbor Clean-Up scheduled for Sunday, (Oct. 24) from 10 a.m. through noon. More than 180 volunteer scuba divers have signed up to scour the bottom of the ocean floor with the assistance of more than 100 surface support personnel.
The event is being organized by The Sea Divers, one of the oldest diving clubs in Southern California.
David Serena, chairman of the Clean-Up and a member of The Sea Divers says the event has had a positive effect on the ocean environment at the harbor. "We wanted to continue our efforts to improve our city and have a fundraiser for our sport at the same time," said Serena.
Along with the 250 divers, almost 150 volunteer surface support personnel from the local community and Southern California Edison will be helping clean up under the harbor's docks. Following the clean-up dive, all the volunteers will be treated to a barbecue luncheon hosted by Edison, held under the giant Whaling Wall XXXI mural at Edison's Redondo Beach Generating Station. Many local sponsors will be contributing items for the "goody bags," as well as awards and prizes for the divers and surface support personnel.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, a local medial facility, on Catalina Island designed to aid the recovery of divers or other persons injured by breathing pressurized gases. "More than $3,000 was raised last year for this unique facility," said Serena.
There will be awards for divers who recover the items deemed the largest or heaviest, smallest, oldest, most unusual, most amusing, most valuable and special items, as well as for the most classic or antique bottle. The awards will be presented at a mid-afternoon ceremony to divers and surface support personnel.
The Clean-Up is being sponsored by Southern California Edison, The Daily Breeze, the Harbor and Pier Association of Redondo Beach, the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce, Brown-Ferris Industries, Western Waste Industries, GTE California, Adventures In Diving and Electricar. Electricar will have a 14 passenger electric shuttle on hand for the day's events.
