SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CLERKS SETTLEMENT ANNOUNCED FOR LUCKY STORES

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- American Stores Company (NYSE: ASC) announced today that an agreement has been reached between its Lucky Stores operations in southern California and the ten southern California United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) locals representing the company's 18,000 clerks and meat cutters. The agreement follows negotiations between Lucky and the unions and is the first time Lucky has bargained separately from other southern California food retailers.
The three-year agreement is, for the most part, identical to the pact negotiated earlier this week by the other major southern California food retailers. However, it does contain differences in certain terms and conditions that were important to Lucky.
"We are pleased that this negotiation was concluded amicably, and that we can continue to serve our customers in southern California without interruption," said Robert P. Hermanns, executive vice president and general manager of the Southern California Lucky operations. "Importantly, we set a precedent for individual negotiations with he unions which, going forward, will allow us to continue to address the needs of our business and our associates."
The southern California operations of Lucky Stores are headquartered in Buena Park, Calif. American Stores Company also operates Lucky Stores in northern California, as well as other food retail operations, including Jewel Food stores, Acme Markets, and Star Market.
