SOUTHERN BOYS' SOCCER: AREA TEAMS LOOK STRONG.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

La Canada is the place to go to find a boys' soccer team capable of advancing deep in the Southern Section playoffs.

In playoff pairings announced Monday, La Canada High is seeded first in Division IV and St. Francis of La Canada is third in the same division. Only one other local team, Malibu at No. 4 in Division V, was seeded in the top four in any division.

First-round games are Saturday and wild-card games Wednesday at 3 p.m.

La Canada opens Saturday against Rosamond and St. Francis is at home against Cabrillo.

La Canada and St. Francis enter the postseason as the area's hottest teams. Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:
  • Río Hondo, a town in the Guatemalan department of Zacapa.
  • Rio Hondo (Belize), a river which forms much of the border between Belize and Mexico.
  • Rio Hondo (California), a tributary of the Los Angeles River in the U.S. state of California.
League champion La Canada is undefeated and on a scoring spree that has produced at least five goals a game during the past month and a half. Seniors Bassam Kahan and Eric Irvine and junior Will Pennial lead the group of nine returning all-league players, who use their experience and sound technical play to make up for a lack of size.

St. Francis entered the season with a more uncertain outlook as the defending Mission League co-champ looked to fill key vacancies. But the Golden Knights

jelled and ended up being the top team in the tight Mission race.

A possible La Canada-St. Francis final requires overcoming a field filled with locals. The six local representatives in Division IV is second only to the eight locals in Division II.

St. Francis could face a rematch with league rival Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks. St. Francis was the first Mission League team to beat Notre Dame and start a late-season shake up of the league standings. Notre Dame and Crespi of Encino finished tied for second in the Mission League, leaving Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  out of the playoff picture.

Other locals in the Division IV field include Alpha League champion Paraclete and Tri-Valley League runnerup Oak Park, which opens at Crespi.

At least two locals will be eliminated in the first round in Division II because of head-to-head matchups. Lancaster has the difficult task of playing at Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Rio Mesa plays at Foothill champion Canyon. If Simi Valley wins its wild-card game, the Pioneers would play at Golden League champion Quartz Hill.

Among the five area teams in Division V is Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:

  • Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood, California
of North Hollywood, which is making its first playoff appearance in five years. The Vikings open at Desert Christian.
