SOUTHERN BELL UNVEILS 1993 ATLANTA WHITE PAGES DIRECTORIES IN CELEBRATION OF TWO NEW ATLANTA LANDMARKS

ATLANTA, Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- During the next few weeks, Southern Bell begins a salute to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the Georgia Dome with the delivery of the 1993 Atlanta White Pages Directories.
The residence directory cover features the Fernbank Museum in an original watercolor by Georgia artist Allen Davis. The Georgia Dome -- the largest cable-supported dome in the world -- is the subject of the business~government cover in a painting by Lynwood Hall, also a Georgia artist.
"The Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the Georgia Dome represent two important new landmarks to the city," said Carl Swearingen, Southern Bell's president for Georgia Operations. "We salute the Fernbank Museum as it presents the world through a unique and innovative museum style. The exhibit 'A Walk Through Time in Georgia,' for example, features galleries on all of Georgia's regions paired with galleries featuring various stages in the Earth's development.
"The Georgia Dome, home to the Atlanta Falcons, will provide tremendous economic impact to the city, as well as more than 1,800 new jobs," explained Swearingen. "It expands the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, making it the second-largest convention center in the U.S."
The new directories include detailed articles about the Fernbank Museum and the Georgia Dome, found on page two of the Customer Guide section.
Southern Bell's Customer Guide is an introductory section of the directory including information about: services for the disabled, national area codes, directory assistance, international calling information, how to obtain repair service, how to change or have new service installed, billing and payment, how to use selected Southern Bell services, and other valuable consumer information.
More than 19.6 million pounds of paper, 342,500 pounds of ink, 357,300 pounds of cover stock, and 160,300 pounds of glue went into the production of both volumes of the new Atlanta White Pages plus the two- volume Southern Bell Yellow Pages.
The pages of all of the 1992-93 books -- laid end to end -- would total nearly 700,000 miles. That is the equivalent of pages stretching to the moon and back one-and-one-half times or around the Earth's equator 28 times.
As new directories are delivered, customers have the opportunity to recycle the old ones. Metro area Keep Georgia Clean and Beautiful organizations, along with local residents, businesses and BellSouth Advertising and Publishing Co., are expected to recycle more than 1,000 tons of old directories, diverting them from area landfills. Details will be available through the new "Real Consumer Tips" service found in the Atlanta Yellow Pages under the heading of Recycling Centers.
Distribution of the new directories begins Dec. 2. Both the Southern Bell White Pages and Yellow Pages are published by BellSouth Advertising and Publishing Co., a BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) subsidiary.
