SOURCES: PARK TO SIGN 5-YEAR DEAL WITH TEXAS.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

The Dodgers' interest in re-signing right-hander Chan Ho Park proved to be nothing more than a fad.

On the day the Dodgers signed right-hander Hideo Nomo Hideo Nomo

to a two-year contract, Park agreed to a five-year, $71 million free-agent contract with the Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. ``We're getting close to a deal for him,'' said Scott Boras Scott Boras (b. November 2, 1952 in California) is a sports agent for professional baseball players. Though Dodgers general manager Dan Evans continually professed interest in retaining Park's services, a contract offer never was made and Evans said he was unwilling to give Park a multiyear deal. Park officially declined salary arbitration Wednesday, though Evans was made aware of it Monday.

``Once I learned Park was not going to accept arbitration, we moved in another direction,'' Evans said. ``I was hesitant to get into a long-term deal with him. I was hesitant to enter into another high-priced contract. I was hesitant to get into a long-term deal with Chan Ho.''

Park, 28, was arguably the best free-agent pitcher on the market, and the Dodgers will get a first-round draft pick from the Rangers as compensation. Park was 15-11 with a 3.50 ERA for a depleted de·plete

He has a career mark of 80-54 with a 3.80 ERA, and was 33-21 with a 3.38 ERA in leading the Dodgers in wins each of the last two seasons.

Park was third in the major leagues with 26 quality starts and opponents hit only .216 against him last season, but bad feelings surfaced between him and the Dodgers in the final month.

Park was criticized by Dodgers manager Jim Tracy

``It's not a policy or a new philosophy,'' Evans said. ``In this case I wasn't comfortable with a long-term deal.''
