What corporations must do is ask employees exactly what it is about their job that causes their stress and then act appropriately to remedy situation.

There is no blanket solution because each company is different and the stress-related problems are often complicated, Lowman added. But the stress is almost always related to a specific problem.

Maslach is completing a work-related stress study of employees in Sweden, one of the few countries that tracks work and health issues. Recent data reports an increase in the number of sick leaves due to job burnout, she said.

"The upswing is taking place primarily in traditional white-collar and health care professions -- not in blue-collar," she said.

Symptoms of job burnout include withdrawal, irritability and lack of self-worth by an employee, she said.
