He is the half-brother of former NBA center Walt Bellamy. Ron also started his career in basketball, playing collegiately at UNC-Charlotte and professionally in New Zealand and Europe. for his continued excellence in writing about our favorite sport. We have three comments. 1. How would the crowd in a football/baseball/basketball game react if the announcer started calling the game in French or German? Saturday at the West Regional track meet, the usual excellent announcer called the first flight of the discus in metrics and the markers on the field showed metric distances only to the west stands. The NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association Track and Field Rule Book states that record marks must be measured and recorded metrically met·ri·cal adj. 1. Of or relating to measurement. but that imperial measurement (yards, feet, inches) is an accepted alternative, and when performances are measured metrically, it is recommended that they are recorded, displayed and announced metrically and imperially. Consequently, a meet director who does not supply imperial measurements to the fans and media is in violation of NCAA rules. 2. We rather like the University of Oregon's experiment with a track team being run by assistant coaches. The athletes seemed to be doing better in their specialties than if they would have to double and triple in other events. It is head coaches worried about their careers who place team points above personal performances. A lot of history surrounds this field, and we keep going back to a particular period of time that defines it all. To complete what has been started, the last piece, we have Bill Bowerman William J. STEVEN HUNNICUTT Eugene Athletes made the team Regarding Eaton Conant's letter (Sound Off, May 29): Without Galen Rupp, the Ducks are not Pac-10 champs. Galen would not have been here without Smith's departure. I will give credit where it is due. Martin Smith somehow found the time to build such a great team while simultaneously alienating a large portion of the fan base. And, so you know, I am not talking about Phil Knight. I am talking about people like me. People like high school track and cross country coaches. People like high school runners (Galen Rupp is not the only runner he found a way to alienate). People like volunteer officials at meets. So many of us grew up loving Oregon track. So few of us were welcome during the Martin Smith era. That certainly was an impressive feat. Now let's give credit where it is really due. To the young men and women who persevered through this ordeal. SCOTT REED Wilsonville Memories of Pre The Register-Guard brought back many fond memories that I feel should be shared. I came to Eugene in 1952 to be a teacher and coach in the Bethel School District Bethel School District may refer to:
After many years as a competitor and coach in many sports, I am now only a fan of sports. Track attendance has been declining because of scheduling and other reasons. For example, I attended the first Oregon Twilight meet. There must have been 10,000 people in the stands. The events were filled with Oregon athletes. I attended the Twilight Meet last year and this year. More than half the events didn't have an Oregon competitor in them. The UO athletes who did enter were only using the event for training. Steve Prefontaine was some kind of super human! I remember sitting in the East Grandstand next to an Oklahoma State distance runner during an NCAA Championship meet. I suddenly heard some cheering from the West Grandstand. Steve Prefontaine had run onto the track. The Oklahoma State distance runner turned to his buddy and said, "That is the only guy I know who gets a standing ovation from 10,000 people for just taking off his sweats!" I will never forget that. GENE HARP Eugene Blazers might as well trade So John Nash is smiling about getting the third pick in the upcoming draft? Why aren't the Portland fans smiling? It's because unlike Nash, we know Blazers history. Let's draft a no-name big man and build our team around him. Maybe he can talk Stanley Roberts out of retirement. Nash has already destroyed the Blazers in his short time as GM. With recent picks Qyntel Woods and nowhere-to-be-seen Erick Barkley, Nash should be reading up on past drafts instead of smiling for the cameras. If you tried to find any Blazer draft picks from the past 11 years, you won't find them anywhere near a Blazers locker room. Let's just trade the pick to the Clippers and let them continue the run of draft busts. History shows that the Blazers won't use it intelligently. It was founded as Eugene High School around 1900, and was located at Willamette Street and West 11th Avenue in a brick building that later served as Eugene's city hall. softball team is back, but looking at the Midwestern League's all-league team or following The Register-Guard's coverage, you would never know it. The South girls finished third in the league with a 10-6 record. Yet, out of the 28 girls who made first- or second-team all-league, only two South girls were honored ... both second-team selections. The two teams that finished below South in the standings had 10 girls honored, four of them first-team picks. Making no judgments as to why this happened, it's obvious that the South girls were not given the credit they so richly deserved. Churchill's Eric Leyba, a fine coach, was picked as coach of the year. Just as deserving was South's first-year head coach, Bob VanDell. He led a team that was 4-18 last year to a 13-9 record this year, including South's first-ever state playoff appearance. South's 10 conference wins gave them their first winning season since 1995 and equaled their total conference wins for the previous six years combined! PrepWeek sportswriters missed a great turnaround story here. STEVE ESTEY Eugene |
