More time for Brandi

Why in the world is Brandi Davis sitting on the bench? Davis was the centerpiece of an explosive offense a couple of years ago, but now she's been relegated to chief bench-warmer.

Davis may be the most talented player coach Smith will ever have, but instead of developing her, she's letting her atrophy. And instead of developing the Ducks into a contender, coach Smith is turning the Ducks into a run-of-the-mill team.

Coach Smith says she's going to work Davis into the rotation. Coach should work the rotation around Davis if she wants the Ducks to be a serious threat in the Pac-10.

 violates own policy

I'm writing in support of School District 4J as it appeals the OSAA redistricting redistricting: see legislative apportionment.  proposal. Sheldon and South Eugene should remain in the Midwestern League.

There are many reasons why the OSAA proposal is flawed, but I'd like to highlight three:

First, it has made a decision for which it has no jurisdiction. The OSAA is chartered to govern sports and activities, not academics. Moving Sheldon and South Eugene into a league based in Southern Oregon This article is about the southern region of the U.S. state of Oregon. For the University, see Southern Oregon University.
Southern Oregon is a region of the U.S.
will have a negative impact (loss of class time) on the academic opportunities for our student-athletes.

Second, the OSAA has violated its own written policies. Please visit www.osaa.org and review the OSAA Handbook, specifically page 12. You will find nine criteria the reclassification Reclassification

The process of changing the class of mutual funds once certain requirements have been met. These requirements are generally placed on load mutual funds. Reclassification is not considered to be a taxable event.
sub-committee is charged with considering when reclassifying schools. In regard to Sheldon and South Eugene, they considered two and ignored seven. When did sports considerations begin to outweigh academic considerations? Our kids are students first, athletes second.

Third, removing Sheldon and South from the Midwestern League is unnecessary. The Bethel, Springfield and Eugene school districts banded together and asked to remain together in the same sports league A sports league is an organization that exists to provide a regulated competition for a number of people to compete in a specific sport. At its simplest, it may be a local group of amateur athletes who form teams among themselves and compete on weekends; at its most complex, it can . There are enough local teams to have a well-formed league.

I encourage Susan Castillo Susan Castillo (born August 14 1951) heads the Oregon Department of Education as the Superintendent of Public Instruction.[1] Although she currently holds an elective statewide non-partisan office, she is a Democrat, and served from 1997 to 2003 in the Oregon State  and the Oregon Department of Education The Department of Education of the U.S. state of Oregon is responsible for implementation of state policies with respect to public education at the kindergarten through community college level, including academic standards and testing, credentials, and other matters not reserved to  to overturn this very flawed proposal, and for other concerned citizens (especially students at South and Sheldon) to contact her office and make your voices heard.

More to the Marist story

I am extremely concerned about the recent firing of girls varsity basketball coach Makana Apo.

Makana has coached basketball at Marist High School for four years with spirit, as well as a love of the game and the players he coaches. His termination from Marist therefore is extremely disconcerting dis·con·cert
tr.v. dis·con·cert·ed, dis·con·cert·ing, dis·con·certs

. I believe there is more to this story than is being told by principal Perry Martin and former athletic director Corey Anderson.

A recent article in The Register-Guard quoted the Marist administration as saying that no one questions Makana Apo's integrity. I believe that this is exactly what was done by the administration at Marist High School.

I look forward to seeing this story further unfold.
