A new batch of Bruins

Before the Bruin-Duck game Sunday drops from our memories, please consider: The Bruins played full-out for the entire game. Their defense, the belly-to-belly kind, would have warmed Dick Harter's heart. They even appeared to listen to their coach.

This team made a game plan succeed: unrelenting pressure defense and, no doubt, a few comments to hurt the confidence of Oregon's young players.

We should give them credit when it's due and hope that the new Bruins weaken a bit by the time the Ducks play them again.

Put money to work

During all the bowl games I watched, there was a moment when the bowl people expressed their thanks for the sacrifice our young men and women are making in Iraq and Afghanistan to protect our American way The American way of life is an expression that refers to the "life style" of people living in the United States of America. In addition to mouthing words, why don't these bowl games - made possible by these young men and women, and their families - contribute a small percentage of the hundreds of millions of dollars they make to a special fund for these military families in financial need?

Maybe just 5 percent of each of the net receipts of these bowl games is all that is needed. This would effectively and concretely demonstrate their appreciation to our military.

Give credit where it's due

Perhaps Tara "sore loser" VanDerveer could benefit from just a touch of humility Humility

and a bit more good sportsmanship. While Ms. VanDerveer has every right to be proud of her team's national ranking and of its Pac-10 championships, she might want to consider that last Wednesday her team wasn't out there playing alone.

I think I have an answer to her statement about "our inability to execute offensively, our lack of intensity defensively - I don't have an answer".

What an oversight to not notice that the team the Cardinal were playing against probably had something to do with how her team played. I don't think the Ducks were just out there bumbling bum·ble 1

Instead, after watching these young women play for the last three years and this preseason, what I saw were many strong and seasoned players come together as a team, a deep team, and play some of their best defense ever.

So I guess more than this being about a losing coach's somewhat arrogant and ungracious response to her team's loss, I'm writing to say congratulations Ducks, job well done!
