SOUND CHECK.

Korn/``Follow the Leader'' (Immortal/Epic)

Korn is the Rodney Dangerfield of noxious hard rock - they get no respect. Not that these nitwits deserve any. The Huntington Beach quintet creates the sort of repulsive one-dimensional noise that makes a gasoline-powered leaf blower sound like a string quartet. The band's predictably unlistenable un·lis·ten·a·ble

Snoop Dogg/``Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told'' (No Limit/Priority)

Snoop's cameos on Dr. Dre's ``The Chronic'' helped make that 1993 disc one of rap's most influential recordings. Now signed to Master P's factory, where every release sounds alike and they all share nearly the same cover design, Snoop's lost his charm. There's just nothing very special about the production talents of No Limit's tepid Beats by the Pound Beats By the Pound, now known as the Medicine Men, is a four-man Southern rap remix and production team.[1] It consists of the former in-house production team for Master P's No Limit Records, as well as some new artists, and was responsible for the production of , which offers little variety on these tracks. Des'ree/ ``Supernatural'' (550 Music)

London-based chanteuse chan·teuse
n.
A woman singer, especially a nightclub singer.

[French, feminine of chanteur, singer, from chanter, to sing; see chant.]
Des'ree broke through about four years ago. On her just-released third album, she's hit her stride with soaring vocals, first-class material and strong arrangements touching on pop, rock, reggae, folk and soul ballads. Best tracks here include ``Life,'' a smart fusion of pop and soul; the sweeping ballad ``I'm Kissing You''; the imaginative title track mixing funk, reggae and folk elements; and the Caribbean-tinged ``Proud to Be Dread.'' One of the most seductive soul-pop discs of the year. Three stars

Soundtrack/``The Avengers: Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture'' (Atlantic)

Awful movie, so-so soundtrack. The companion disc to the failed summer flick offers a mildly diverting sampling of such hot acts as Annie Lennox, Sugar Ray and the Verve Pipe. Best of all is a Roni Size/Reprazent drum 'n' bass track and two numbers from Ashtar Command, a new project featuring members of Filter with vocal help from Veruca Salt's Louise Post and Sinead O'Connor. There's also a chilled-out reading of the ``Avengers'' theme from U2/Madonna producer Marius deVries. Two stars

Various/``For the Masses'' (A&M)

On this elegant tribute album to '80s pretty boys Depeche Mode, the strength of Martin Gore's songs stands out. However, who knew the band had this many high-profile fans? ``For the Masses'' features tracks from such diverse acts as Smashing Pumpkins, the Cure, Veruca Salt, Hooverphonic, Gus Gus, Rammstein and others. Among the best moments here are God Lives Underwater's ``Fly on the Windscreen,'' Failure's ``Enjoy the Silence'' and Apollo 440's ``I Feel You.'' Two and a half stars

Hank Mobley/``The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions'' (Mosaic)

This six-CD package collects the music of tenor saxophonist Mobley recorded at nine '50s sessions for Blue Note. The gutsy, subtle and always-interesting soloist is accompanied by an all-star cast that includes trumpeters This article lists notable musicians who have played the trumpet, cornet or flugelhorn.

, plus others. Despite such big names, the star of the show is clearly Mobley, whose soulful, perfectly round tone puts across this varied set of straight-ahead be-bop burners and low-lights ballads. Mosaic releases are available by mail-order only. Call (203) 327-7111. Three and a half stars

Christian McBride/``A Family Affair'' (Verve)

Bassist Christian McBride, just 26 years old, -has played on more than 100 recordings, including gigs with Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Kathleen Battle and Chaka Khan. It's easy to see why he's in such demand from ``A Family Affair,'' a catchy pop-jazz album full of terrific songs and inspired playing. Five of the 10 songs here are McBride originals, including two with soulful vocals. The remainder of the album features covers of such r&b classics as Stevie Wonder's sensuous ``Summer Soft'' and the cover song, where McBride's acoustic bass makes like Sly Stone's rough-and-tumble voice. ``A Family Affair'' assimilates jazz, funk, soul and pop into one delightful sound that grows more infectious each time you hear it. Highly recommended. Three and a half stars

Willy Lobo/``Juicy'' (Verve)

This is another treat from Verve's ``By Request'' series, which takes long-out-of-print albums and repackages them at a budget price. The great percussionist Lobo is in fine form here, training his trademark, down-and-dirty Latin sound on party classics like ``Knock on Wood,'' ``Mercy, Mercy, Mercy'' and ``Shing-a-Ling Baby.'' Every song settles into a shake-your-tail-feathers groove, and if the album's 12 cuts aren't enough, the reissue includes four alternate takes that are every bit as juicy as the originals. Three stars

This compilation gathers what is ostensibly the cream of Gershwin covers from the Decca catalogue, from Louis Armstrong's 1938 ``Love Walked In'' to Teresa Brewer's 1960 ``They Can't Take That Away "They Can’t Take That Away" is a single by New Zealand Idol season one winner, Benjamin Lummis, released in 2004. It went to number one in its first week, where it remained for seven weeks.  From Me.''

You know these songs; you know these singers. In fact, you may already own some of these recordings on vinyl or 78-rpm formats and may be anxious to hear them free of the old snap, crackle and pop Snap, Crackle and Pop! are the cartoon mascots of Kellogg's breakfast cereal Rice Krispies (Rice Bubbles in Australia).
