So says Warren Zevon in his heartfelt introduction to "Hasten Down the Wind," and if that doesn't hit you in the gut, nothing will. Zevon is gone, of course, but his wonderfully warped music remains with us. Somehow, this combustible com·bus·ti·ble adj. Capable of igniting and burning. n. A substance that ignites and burns readily. concert performance, recorded at the Roxy in 1980, never made it to CD until now. Zevon, newly sober, plays with the fire and passion of a soul reborn and delivers the definitive versions of several of his classics, including "Excitable excitable /ex·ci·ta·ble/ (ek-sit´ah-b'l) irritable (1). ex·cit·a·ble adj. 1. The CD adds four previously unreleased songs (two ballads, two scorchers), including the poignant closer mentioned above. But tenor saxophonist Tom Scott can also play that most difficult kind of jazz music -- bebop. For this live date at the Manchester Craftsman Guild in Pittsburgh, Scott assembled a group of like-minded players -- led by bebop legend Phil Woods on alto -- to play through a set of mostly Scott-penned charts that ooze OOZE - Object oriented extension of Z. "Object Orientation in Z", S. Stepney et al eds, Springer 1992. creativity, raw musicianship and just plain love for the bebop and hard bop styles.
