SOUND CHECK.TEENA MARIE Teena Marie (born Mary Christine Brockert on March 5, 1956 in Santa Monica, California, USA) is an American singer/songwriter/producer. Did you know that Hank Mobley's ``The Turnaround,'' Wayne Shorter's ``Footprints'' and Duke Jordan's ``Jordu'' have lyrics? They do now, thanks to Karrin Allyson's latest monumental release. Most of the new words were penned for this project by Chris Caswell and are expertly rendered by Allyson and guest singers Nancy King and Jon Hendricks. The vocalists open up new windows of meaning to melodies very familiar to jazz fans. A superb trio anchored by pianist Bruce Barth only adds to the intimate quality of the session. Allyson appears May 25-28 at Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood. - Steven Rosenberg JEWEL: ``Goodbye Alice in Wonderland'' (Atlantic) - Three stars Jewel is fun even when she's serious. After her dance-pop misfire, ``0304,'' comes her sixth and most autobiographical effort - and it's a welcome return to the tuneful folk-pop of her debut. Although she's writing here about her rags-to-riches life, anyone who imagines this is just another pretty, rich girl moaning about fame, mean boyfriends and her astrological chart would be mistaken. Jewel sequences the 13 tracks to follow her well-documented early waif years in Alaska to her move to California, and observational fare like ``Again and Again,'' ``Fragile Heart'' (a far-better version of a song that appeared on ``0304'') and ``Long Slow Slide'' stand with her very best. The production by veteran hitmaker Rob Cavallo, which places one of pop's warmest voices in a finely crafted bed of keyboards and guitar, makes this gem shimmer. - F.S. Every cut is terrific, whether performed by one of the usual deacons (Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, the Country Gentlemen) or by fantastic, semi-obscure family acts (one named Forbes contributed two particularly spine-tingling cuts). There's also a nice mix of familiar spirituals such as ``Just a Closer Walk With Thee'' and strikingly individual works like the Marshall Family's ``I Just Want to Thank You Lord.'' Overall, as good as church gets. - Bob Strauss ERIN BOHEME: ``What Love Is'' (Concord) - Three and one half stars Teenagers singing standards like ``Let's Do It'' or ``Teach Me Tonight'' usually give me the willies wil·lies pl.n. With her debut, Boheme not only demonstrates her thorough understanding of the aforementioned songs but also acquits herself nicely on her own compositions, which include the lovely title cut and the heartfelt Sinatra tribute, ``One Night With Frank.'' She'll be around for quite some time. - Glenn Whipp CAPTION(S): 6 photos Photo: (1) no caption (Teena Marie) (2 -- 6) no caption (CD covers) |
