Modeled after the Xerox Star and introduced in 1983 by Apple, it was ahead of its time, but never caught on due to its $10,000 price and slow speed.  LOEB: ``The Way It Really Is'' (Zoe/Rounder) - Three stars

This 11-track set offers further proof that Loeb really is as clever as her thick-framed glasses suggest. Over gleaming power-pop chords and the occasional searing sear 1

She even dresses up ``Accident,'' a song about obsession with the misfortunes of others, into bite-size anecdotes like one about a clumsy heiress who slips and cracks her jaw. Other standouts include ``I Control the Sun,'' ``Would You Wander'' and ``Try.''

of bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Victor Lewis and you know you're in for something special, and this live date doesn't disappoint. Williams, a crack composer herself, leans pretty heavily on outside material, but that's OK, because this trio can take even a familiar song like ``I'm Confessin' That I Love You'' and turn it into something you've never heard before with a nice quote from ``Salt Peanuts'' attached. Highlights include the funky original, ``Tutu's Promise,'' followed by a tender reading of Billy Cobham's melodic ballad ``Heather.'' Piano trios don't get any better than this.

RALPHI ROSARIO: ``Cassagrande Club Presents'' (Metropol) - Three stars

For more than 20 years, Chicago house maestro Rosario has been burning up dance floors with his trademark beats; his latest remix, ``What're You Gonna Do,'' by Alyson, is a current club favorite. Blitzkriegs of progressive and tribal beats, Rosario's sets could make the dead dance and this double dose is a perfect example. Disc one is more mainstream and commercial, but there's still enough of an edge to please deeper fans. Peace Division's ``Feel It'' and Rosario's mix of ``I Hear the Music'' are crowd pleasers. On the second disc, Ralphi breaks out the after-hours tracks, highlighted by ``Sounds So Good.'' Rosario spins Sunday at Sunset Junction.

It's sort of a ``Dusty in Memphis'' for the steroids era, a heart-palpitating blast of classic soul sound replete with whirling organs, blazing horn sections and impassioned backup choirs. And Merritt sings the holy ghost out of rave-ups like ``Late Night Pilgrim'' and ``Shadow in the Way,'' while turning the yearning ``Good Hearted Man'' into what, in a righteous world, should be the anthem of the year. Out Tuesday.
