SOUND CHECK.Buffalo Springfield/``Buffalo Springfield (Box Set)'' (Rhino) Unless you know pop history, the name Buffalo Springfield probably suggests Dusty's bison-hugging brother. In fact, this all-star late-'60s band boasts an enduring legacy, despite having scored just one Top-10 single with 1967's ``For What It's Worth.'' The three Springfield albums released between 1967 and 1968 that make up a sturdy chunk of this consistently charming four-disc set rank among rock's cornerstones, alongside equally valuable and important works by the Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Noun 1. Jimi Hendrix - United States guitarist whose innovative style with electric guitars influenced the development of rock music (1942-1970) Hendrix, James Marshall Hendrix , Love and the Doors. The band's enjoyably twisted synthesis of pop, rock, folk, country and psychedelic elements reflected its membership - Neil Young, Stephen Stills Stephen Arthur Stills (born January 3, 1945) is an American guitarist and singer/songwriter best known for his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash (and Young). , Richie Furay, Dewey Martin There are at least two notable people named Dewey Martin:
Bruce Palmer (September 9 1946 – October 1 2004) was a Canadian musician most famous for playing bass guitar in the influential folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield. and later Jim Messina Jim Messina (born James Messina, December 5 1947, in Maywood, California) was a member of Buffalo Springfield, then an original member of the country rock band Poco, before he joined with Kenny Loggins to form the soft rock duo, Loggins and Messina. - almost all of whom made more rock history in later years. Compiled and produced by Young, this 88-track retrospective brings together the band's first two albums, remastered in their entirety along with 36 previously unreleased tracks, including demos, outtakes and alternate mixes. It's a welcome history lesson that hardly seems dated at all. Four stars - Fred Shuster Rhonda Vincent/``The Storm Still Rages'' (Rounder) With her blisteringly tight backup unit the Rage, mandolinist Vincent tears through a set of traditional mountain songs, country classics that were just achin' to get higher and lonesomer (``Drivin' Nails in My Coffin,'' ``Just Someone I Used to Know'') and transcendent originals. There's a disarming display of vocal gymnastics on the gospel novelty ``You Don't Love God If You Don't Love Your Neighbor'' and even a pitch for Rhonda's favorite baking flour. What's more authentic than that? Four stars. - Bob Strauss Django Reinhardt/``Swing 39'' (Verve) ``All Star Sessions'' (Capitol) Woody Allen's 1999 film ``Sweet and Lowdown'' sparked a renewal of interest in Reinhardt, the great gypsy guitarist, and these two budget reissues are nice - albeit very different - places to become acquainted with his joyous music. The Verve date features Reinhardt with long-time collaborator violinist Stephane Grappelli Noun 1. Stephane Grappelli - French jazz violinist (1908-1997) Grappelli and the rest of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France in a typically swinging session recorded in Paris just before World War II. Reinhardt's playing is endlessly creative, evident by the way he reworks ``Tea for Two'' three times, making each version a magical experience. Reinhardt's solos, whether with chords or single notes, show why his legend persists - and grows - to this day. 1/2 ``All Star Sessions'' is a grab bag grab bag n. 1. - Glenn Whipp Dave Navarro/``Trust No One'' (Capitol) Eddie From Ohio/``Quick'' (Virginia Soul) Actually based in Virginia, percussionist Eddie Hartness and friends make music as eclectic as their non sequitur non sequitur (nahn sek [as in heck]-kwit-her) n. Latin for "it does not follow." The term usually means that a conclusion does not logically follow from the facts or law, stated: "That's a non sequitur." name. What saves this odd quartet from the quirk basket is accomplished musicianship and terrific vocals, especially from frontwoman Julie Murphy Wells. Whether warbling about postmodern cave love (``Let's Get Mesolithic'') or leading a cappella harmonies, she lends conviction to the goofiest and corniest lyrical ploys. This is that rare act that's just clever enough for its own good. Three and one half stars. - B.S. CAPTION(S): 5 photos Photo: (1) no caption (Buffalo Springfield) (2 -- 5) no caption (CD covers) |
