SOUND CHECK.

Bijou Phillips/``I'd Rather Eat Glass'' (Almo)

Almo wisely limits its roster to a handful of critically acclaimed acts. So, there must be something plainly poptastic about Phillips, the 19-year-old daughter of Papa John Phillips John Phillips or John Philips may refer to:
  • John Aristotle Phillips (fl. 1977), American undergraduate amateur A-bomb designer
  • John Calhoun Phillips (1870–1943), Governor of Arizona, 1929–1931
, right? Actually, not really. Phillips, produced here by Talking Head Jerry Harrison Jerry Harrison (born Jeremiah Griffin Harrison, 21 February 1949, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) was the keyboardist and guitarist for the influential New Wave group, Talking Heads. He was also an original member of The Modern Lovers. , goes for the ``angry little rich girl'' delivery of so many others, coming up with just a couple of memorable songs along the way. Ricky Martin/``Ricky Martin'' (C2/Columbia)

Ex-Menudo member Martin has already sold 15 million worldwide, but he caught the eye of many U.S. pop fans with his charismatic performance of ``The Cup of Life'' at the Grammys in February. Now comes the first of his four albums to be recorded in English, and nobody's taking chances. Here, the 27-year-old Latin hottie teams with guaranteed hit-makers Desmond Child, Emilio Estefan Jr. and Diane Warren for a flavorful, well-crafted platter that simply can't miss. It's bright, forceful pop: all horns, hot Latin percussion

Sheila Chandra/``Moonsung: A Real World Retrospective'' (Real World)

Chandra began mixing Indian song and instrumentation with pop elements in London in the early '80s and subsequently influenced the likes of currently hot tabla tabla

some of the best of those three works and adds two new tracks as well, showing her gorgeous, complex vocalizations set against the simplest of musical backing, usually just a single drone out of any of a series of world music traditions. This is stunning, sterling stuff - distilled to the spare, cool, mysterious bones of melody and atmosphere - that is too seldom heard, given Chandra's fierce control over her music. Here's your chance. Three and one half stars

The hit-bound title track of ``Two Teardrops'' illustrates all that's terrific about this award-winning artist - aggressive playing, insightful lyrics and emotive crooning. Three stars

Soundtrack/``Songs From Dawson's Creek'' (Columbia)

Kids in droves are buying this synergistic TV tie-in, partly for the music and partly due to a nifty marketing ploy that offers a pic of a different ``Dawson's Creek'' star with every disc. Musically, the album's nothing special, merely a sampler of songs connected to the high-school drama series. It leads off with Sixpence six·pence

Various/``Burning London: The Clash Tribute'' (Epic)

Tribute albums are always dreadful. This ill-advised Clash homage - as if anyone, especially the likes of Third Eye Blind or No Doubt, could better the originals - is just another waste of aluminum. If you loved the Clash, fondly remember their gigs and recall buying their great early singles and first album on import months before their U.S. release, preposterous attempts like Silverchair's ``London Burning,'' Third Eye's ``Train in Vain'' and No Doubt's ``Hateful'' will leave you unsure whether to laugh or cry. One star

These fine collections, available separately with 28 often edgy live tracks in all, follow last year's best-selling Lilith sampler. Outstanding moments from Volume 2 include Sarah McLachlan and Emmylou Harris on a soaring ``Angel,'' Sinead O'Connor's potent ``Fire on Babylon,'' Queen Latifah's ``Life'' and Heather Nova's gorgeous ``Island.'' Volume 3 offers Me'Shell Ndegeocello's funky ``Soul Record,'' Liz Phair's hard-rocking ``Never Said,'' Harris' ``Deeper Well'' and Suzanne Vega's gloomy ``Luka,'' among other highlights. Lilith '99 hits the Rose Bowl on July 17. Three stars
