Roy Orbison - United States composer and rockabilly tenor popular in the 1950s (1936-1988) Orbison and Cyndi Lauper hit, ``I Drove All Night,'' Dion rethinks her approach to an oft-parodied act by putting aside chest-pounding histrionics and faux-gospel tics. Minus the familiar screech, diverse Euro-pop productions like ``Love Is All We Need,'' an even better ``Faith'' and the set-closing ballad ``Je T'aime Encore'' are delivered in a pleasantly silky voice that resembles a chauffeur's soft chamois cloth Noun 1. chamois cloth - a piece of chamois used for washing windows or cars piece of cloth, piece of material - a separate part consisting of fabric . For those keeping score, a big logo trumpeting a new contract with Chrysler is part of the package. - Fred Shuster CRUSADERS: ``Rural Renewal'' (Verve) - Three stars After a long layoff, keyboardist Joe Sample has reformed the Crusaders with his old high-school chums and band mates, drummer Stix Hooper Stix Hooper (born August 15, 1938) is an American soul jazz/hard bop jazz drummer born in Houston, Texas, probably better known for founding his group The Swingsters (which later became known as The Jazz Crusaders.[1] References 1. ^ Yanow, Scott. (one of the all-time great musician names) and saxaphonist Wilton Felder. The result is the best Crusaders album in years featuring the band's pleasing blend of Memphis soul and smooth funk. ``Rural Renewal'' has its share of special guests, among them Eric Clapton, who lends his seasoned blues sensibility to the album's opening two cuts. The song titles aptly describe the laid-back vibe - ``Greasy Spoon,'' ``Lazy Sundays,'' ``Viva de Funk.'' The music won't change the world, but it will sound mighty good in the background when you fire up the barbecue in the coming months. - Glenn Whipp VARIOUS: ``Groove Radio Presents House Grooves'' (Nettwerk) - Three stars Swedish Egil founded L.A.'s premier dance-music radio station, Groove Radio, which earned a reputation for breaking the latest tracks before it foundered and sunk. With this collection of deep, pulsating house grooves, Egil, who today programs dance music for satellite-radio company Sirius, keeps the dance floor jammed. - Phillip Zonkel THE BE GOOD TANYAS: ``Chinatown'' (Nettwerk) - Four stars This female Canadian folk trio has an amazing approach. Lyrics are whispered, harmonies diffused and they pluck their various stringed instruments with a diaphanous delicacy. Yet they manage to work up plenty of passion and powerful rhythmic assaults on a well-judged selection of traditional pieces (``Reuben,'' ``Rowdy Blues''), covers (Townes Van Zandt's ``Waiting Around to Die'') and their own compositions, which tend to be about neighborhood derelicts and dead dogs. - Bob Strauss DF DUB: ``Country Girl'' (Columbia) - Two stars DF Dub, whose handle is a variation of the airport code for Dallas/Fort Worth, rarely takes off on this so-so debut. While his efforts range from lush r&b to bar-band hackery, the 24-year-old suburban Detroit DJ and rapper is simply too all-over-the-map to pack much punch. Although the title track's turntable scratches, acoustic guitar and rhyme about a city kid romancing a country girl is admittedly a charmer charm·er n. 1.
