: ``Live (at) the Fillmore'' (Lost Highway) - Four stars

In an especially memorable show at the Wiltern a few years ago, Williams displayed incredible vocal strength and control; her meticulously engineered studio albums, after all, are as distinctive for the ravaged rav·age

ache in her voice as they are for raw, unflinching songwriting and superb folk-rock musicianship.

Judging by ``Live (at) the Fillmore,'' we caught her on a good night. Although the two-disc set features some marvelous jamming on the likes of ``Righteously'' and ``Real Live Bleeding Fingers,'' Williams' voice goes well over the border between artfully wasted and screechingly strained. The songs still sound pretty great, but if you've heard how expressive one of the greatest living singer-songwriters can be, you can't help but wish she would've 86'd the San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  venue cred cred

WEEZER: ``Make Believe'' (Geffen) - Three stars

Rivers Cuomo taps into feelings of inadequacy and heartbreak on this latest round of hooky pop anthems that recalls Weezer circa the '90s. Think ``Undone: The Sweater Song'' or ``Buddy Holly'' when listening to the opener ``Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. ,'' a rock stomper that lapses into a blistering blues guitar riff. Other songs like ``This Is Such a Pity'' throws back to '80s new wave, while ``My Best Friend'' conjures '60s psychedelic rock. These songs are so melodic, you can't help but love - or at the very least, like - this gem.

ENRICO PIERANUNZI Enrico Pieranunzi (born December 5, 1949) is an Italian jazz pianist. He fuses classical technique with jazz. He has performed with, among others, Frank Rosolino, Sal Nistico, Kenny Clarke, Johnny Griffin, Chet Baker, Joey Baron, Art Farmer, Jim Hall, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Phil : ``Special Encounter'' (CAM Jazz) - Three stars

Elegant Italian pianist Pieranunzi has found like-minded players in bassist Charlie Haden Charles Edward Haden (born August 6, 1937) is a jazz double bassist, probably best known for his long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Haden is also known for his signature lyrical bass lines and is one of the most respected jazz bassists and jazz composers today.  and drummer Paul Motion, with whom he collaborated last year on ``Fellini Jazz.'' This time, the trio sensitively approaches a set heavy on ballads, including three of Haden's favorite originals: ``Waltz for Ruth,'' ``Nightfall'' and ``Hello My Lovely.'' Pieranunzi's playing will please anyone who loves Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock; the album itself is lovely, lyrical and reminiscent of Haden's quiet glories with Pat Metheny and Kenny Barron.
