Still, ``Filthy Lucre Live'' (Virgin) is great fun, even though there's no new material on display. Instead, the disc acts to demonstrate once and for all that Johnny Rotten is among rock's greatest vocalists and the Pistols are one terrific band. Sleeper/``The It Girl'' Cheeky British pop-rock act Sleeper has a keeper in its second effort, ``The It Girl'' (Arista arista (ä·riˑ·st ), a catchy grab bag grab bag n. 1. Rising above it all are singer Louise Wener's cool, detached vocals. On ``Statuesque'' and ``Stop Your Crying,'' Sleeper sounds so much like pre-``Parallel Lines'' Blondie we fear Wener and company may one day abandon brisk, infectious rock and start rapping about the man from Mars and cars. Three Stars SOURCE: - Howard Cohen Black Crowes/``Three Snakes and One Charm'' ``Three Snakes and One Charm'' (American) goes against conventional wisdom by stacking its best tracks deep inside the album. It kicks off with several songs that are nothing special and at the same time echo the Black Crowes' past. But ``Let Me Share the Ride'' finds the band right back in Aerosmith territory, with Rich Robinson's grunting guitar boogie playing up nicely against brother Chris' choppy vocal before veering into a Stax-style r&b chorus. The acoustic ``How Much for Your Wings'' has guitar work that echoes ``Sgt. Pepper''-era Beatles without sounding like any one particular tune. If the Black Crowes have any one particular strength, it's taking the influences of others and making them their own. Two Stars SOURCE: - Mark Brown Frente/``Shape'' With a new bass player and a new production team featuring Dave Allen (the Cure) and Cameron McVey (Massive Attack, Neneh Cherry), Melbourne, Australia's Frente has taken a darker turn in its music. ``Sit on My Hands'' sports a whisper of trip-hop, and the nine-minute album closer, ``Calmly Kill Me,'' is light-years beyond the froth of ``Bizarre Love Triangle'' or ``Labour of Love,'' from the band's first album. While the artistic growth evident on ``Shape'' (Mammoth/Atlantic) is admirable, some problems remain. Lead singer Angie Hart's vocals can still grow tiresome, and the songs, for all the change in the direction, aren't necessarily all that intriguing. This is especially true when compared with other groups, such as Everything but the Girl, working in a similar vein. One Star SOURCE: - Cary Darling jazz Jazz Jamaica/``Skaravan'' Some of ``Skaravan'' (Hannibal/Ryko) is a bit reminiscent of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a New Orleans, Louisiana, brass band. The ensemble was established in 1977 by Benny Jones together with members of the Tornado Brass Band. The Dirty Dozen revolutionized the New Orleans brass band style by incorporating funk and bebop into the , a mirth-filled outfit that takes be-bop and even modal numbers and renders them New Orleans-style. Likewise, the eight-piece Jazz Jamaica, led by bassist Gary Crosby, keeps its rhythmic integrity while offering some smoothly soaring ensembles and nice solo passages. Every tune is enjoyable in its own way, and there's a nice variety of approach and tempo. The title tune (a Jamaican take on the Duke Ellington classic ``Caravan'') is a delightful romp, and a number called ``Ramblin''' turns out to be a pulsating call-and-response thing that will prompt more than a few listeners to get up and dance. Three Stars SOURCE: - Steve Eddy r&b Allen Toussaint/``Connected'' Producer-composer Allen Toussaint's charming new album - his first in 17 years - remains true to his down-home, Big Easy sweet soul ethic. Dig his sly on-line romance with ``Computer Lady'' and world-beat celebrations ``Ahya'' and ``Aign Nyee. The balmy ballad ``In Your Love,'' swaying in the breeze of Gary Brown's saxophone, seems a natural for today's lite-jazz stations, though the intricate melody line holds equal appeal to fans of pop-rock meisters Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks Van Dyke Parks (born January 3, 1943) is an American composer, arranger, producer, musician, singer, and actor. Tradition rears its lovely head on Toussaint's instrumental cakewalks through ``Get Out of My Life, Woman,'' ``Rolling With the Punches'' and the funky ``All of It.'' The sweet blues ``Wrong Number'' is so visionary it could make Ray Charles see, while the good-time rockin' ``Oh My'' compares favorably to Mr. T's classic (Chris Kenner-fronted) production ``I Like It Like That.'' Throughout ``Connected'' (NYNO), Toussaint's soul vocalizing and jubilee jazz keyboard stylings prove a rare treat.
