Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer

For the second year in a row, Hart High graduate John Curtis The name John Curtis might refer to:

The Titans are glad the senior is back as he's expected to be a top hitter and valuable veteran leader for a program that lost 15 players from last season's team that finished tied for third in the nation.

Curtis, who was drafted in the 24th round by the Angels last year, is about to begin his second season as Cal State Fullerton's starting catcher. He is coming off an impressive fall and, due to injuries to teammates, could be the team's top returning hitter when the season starts.

``Johnny's improved each and every year,'' Titans coach George Horton This article is about the U.S. diplomat. For the college baseball coach, see George Horton (baseball coach).

Curtis hit a career-high .277 last season when he started 46 games. He was a second-team All-Big West Conference selection.

The conference's coaches voted Cal State Fullerton as the preseason favorite to win a fourth consecutive Big West Conference championship.

Milone, a sophomore left-hander, is set to begin a second season in USC's weekend rotation with a chance to emerge as an ace in a deep staff. Milone led the Trojans in wins last season when he went 7-4 with a 4.94 ERA. He was the team's only starter with a winning record.

Reunited: Former Hart teammates Shane Carlson and Matt Valaika have been reunited this season as starting infielders for UC Santa Barbara.

Valaika, a freshman, is a candidate to replace his brother Chris at shortstop, but Gauchos coach Bob Brontsema said he is undecided if Valaika will play shortstop or second base, just that ``he will start somewhere.''

Carlson, being considered for three different infield positions, started 38 games last season as a freshman and finished with a .286 batting average.

UC Santa Barbara begins its season Feb. 9 at San Jose State.
