SOTO GETS REVENGE; IN REMATCH, HE BEATS KING FOR GOLDEN TITLE.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

LANCASTER - An upset wrestling loss to John King still fresh in his mind, there was no way Paul Soto was going to lose the rematch.

This time, there was a lot more at stake.

Sure enough, Soto, of Highland High in Palmdale, pinned King of Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

"There's always a pride factor in wrestling, especially when the other guy just beat me (by a 5-3 score) on Wednesday," Soto said. "I have no excuse for what happened last time. Today I was just more focused on wrestling."

The day before Wednesday's loss, Soto signed a Division I football scholarship with Oregon State. He said he got caught up in all the hoopla hoop·la

 and might have overlooked King.

On Saturday, Soto (25-5, 20 pins) was all business. He took an early 4-1 lead, and eventually twisted the stockier King on his back and flattened him.

King said Soto's counter-play approach came as a surprise, and King didn't adjust well.

"When I beat him last time he was shooting (for my legs), but today he didn't shoot," King said. "This time he stayed straight up with me. I'm disappointed. I could have beaten him, but he was the better athlete today."

Soto was one of eight Highland wrestlers to win championships - an impressive feat considering there are 14 weight classes - but understandable considering the Bulldogs have won nine consecutive Golden League titles and 39 league dual meets in a row.

Highland's Mike Estrada started things by taking the 105-pound title with a 7-2 victory over rival Travis Westberg of Antelope Valley.

Estrada leads the region with 46 victories (three losses), including four over Westberg this season.

"I just know how Travis works now," said Estrada, who beat Lancaster's Chad Lataino and Littlerock's Brian Jennings Brian Lewis Jennings (born on October 10 1976 in Mesa, Arizona) is an NFL player. He was drafted by the 49ers in the 7th round (230th overall) in the 2000 NFL Draft.  - both in the first period - to set up the Westberg match. "Travis is strong, but I just used technique. He was real frustrated."

Westberg said Estrada seems to wrestle differently against him, compared to the preliminary matches.

"He just wasn't the same against the other guys as he was against me," Westberg said. "He wrestles real careful."

Highland's Tony Callahan pinned Quartz Hill of Lancaster's Ben Williams For the NFL football player of the same name see Ben Williams (football player). It was Callahan's 31st pin of the season. He's 40-7.

"I just wanted to get this match over with as soon as possible because I was a little tired," Callahan said. "As soon as I got him on his back, it was over."

It was surprising Callahan could be tired. Afer a first-round bye, he buried Henry Ross Captain Henry Ross (1829 - 5 December, 1854) was a Canadian gold miner at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, and was known on the goldfields as the 'bridegroom' of the miners flag, the Southern Cross, the Eureka Flag.  of Littlerock in just 13 seconds in the semifinals.

"He's my drill partner at practice, so he knew me and I knew him," King said. "It was kind of weird to wrestle my own teammate, especially in the finals. But we don't (get) along that well anyway because we're always drilling in practice. We bump heads."

Highland's Nick Petros upset Quartz Hill's Pat Wood in the 142-pound final by injury default.
